Vice President Dick Cheney is finally breaking his silence about his hunting accident. He is appearing on Fox News Channel — of course — at 5 tonight. As this Washington Post article notes, the White House has not been happy with how the vice president’s office has handled the accident, and has been pushing for Cheney to make a public statement.
Meanwhile, the jokes keep coming — though the report Tuesday about Harry Whittington’s heart attack slowed them some. Here is a roundup:
From David Letterman: "We can’t get bin Laden, but we nailed a 78-year-old attorney."
From Leno: "That’s the big story over the weekend. … Dick Cheney accidentally shot a fellow hunter, a 78-year-old lawyer. In fact, when people found out he shot a lawyer, his popularity is now at 92 percent."
And those in politics were busy making jokes, too. Here’s a couple from a Washington Post roundup:
"Bush-Quail ‘06," cracked Democratic strategist Jenny Backus.
"The CIA assured Cheney that Harry Whittington was actually a pheasant," added Democratic speechwriter Jeff Nussbaum.

dead eye dick’s favorite song? The wheels on the bus go ’round and ’round.
http://news.yahoo.com/s/thenation/20060215/cm_thenation/160212
You gotta see this. Instead of dead eye dick, we should call him two beers cheney.
It’s so nice to have something to laugh about.
http://nobravery.cf.huffingtonpost.com/
Day late and a dollar short. And God forbid Cheney should go on camera with anyone but an ass-kisser like Brit (”I love my dead gay son!”) Hume.

VP’s hunting license was expired as well
Lawrence O’Donnell
The L.A. Times is edging closer to the most likely reason for the 18 hour delay in reporting that the Vice President of the United States shot someone:
“This was a hunting accident,” said Gilbert San Miguel, chief deputy of the Kenedy County Sheriff’s Office. “There was no alcohol or misconduct.”
How do we know there was no alcohol? Cheney refused to talk to local authorities until the next day. No point in giving him a breathalyzer then. Every lawyer I’ve talked to assumes Cheney was too drunk to talk to the cops after the shooting. The next question for the White House should be: Was Cheney drunk?
Some reader comments: “Thank you for asking this important question. Law enforcement will always investigate to ascertain if drinking was involved in any accidental shooting. This Administraton believes they are royalty, though, so they will be exempted.”
“We will never know for sure if Dick was drinking however if Whittington agrees the hospital could release his blood results. They would have tested his blood before doing much of anything else. If he wasn’t impaired he should have no problem with this release of information. It wouldn’t show if Dick was drinking but it would indicate whether the group was sober or not.”

Viva La Raza Blanco!!
Hmm, things are getting more interesting. lol
Updated to include coverage in The Nation
An article at MSNBC’s Website was edited to remove references to alcohol, that may have been available at a picnic, which preceded the accidental shooting of a 78-year-old lawyer by Vice President Cheney last Saturday, RAW STORY has learned.
The change to the article was quickly noticed by a number of liberal bloggers, and their readers, many of whom have been following this much discussed story very closely for the last few daysIn the article, credited to Aram Roston and the NBC Investigative Unit, Katherine Armstrong, a member of the family who own the ranch, revealed new details about her lobbying for the Bush Administration, and about circumstances surrounding the incident itself, which wasn’t reported to the media until the following morning. Armstrong was the one who reported the news to a local news reporter, and she said that Cheney agreed with the decision.
The following paragraph was removed for unexplained reasons from the article sometime after it first was published on the Internet:
#Armstrong also told NBC News that she does not believe alcohol was involved in the accident. She says she believes no one that day was drinking, although she says there may have been beer available during a picnic lunch that preceded the incident. “There may be a beer or two in there,” she said, “but remember not everyone in the party was shooting.”
#Jane Hamsher at the popular firedoglake blog included the “beer quote” in a post she wrote while it was still on the Web live, then later noted in an update that the article appeared to have been “scrubbed” (or removed) from the MSNBC Website. Hamsher also linked to an earlier post she wrote in which a similiar “scrubbing” occurred, but that time at the CBS News Website.
Other blogs and Websites that spotted the change include Democratic Underground, Thought Crimes, and Daily Kos.
JohnnyCougar, who left the comment at Democratic Underground, appears to have been the first blogger to catch the switch, and he also covered it at his blog, Someone Took In These Pants….
Since Armstrong was interviewed by telephone there may be lingering questions as to why MSNBC “scrubbed” the story.
Screenshot of the article as it originally appeared on Tuesday: link.
Screenshot of the Google News listing including the “beer quote”: link.
The article as it appears now: link.
(Special thanks to all the RAW STORY readers who sent us links by email. Keep the tips coming!)
Excerpts from an article written by John Nichols at The Nation:
#Vice President Dick Cheney, who was forced to leave Yale University because his penchant for late-night beer drinking exceeded his devotion to his studies, and who is one of the small number of Americans who can count two drunk driving busts on his driving record, may have been doing more than hunting quail on the day that he shot a Texas lawyer in the face.
….
The MSNBC story, which appeared only briefly before the website was scrubbed for reasons not yet explained, has been kept alive by the able web investigators at http://www.rawstory.com and other progressive blogs. And so it should be, as the prospect that alcohol may have been involved in the Texas incident takes the story in a whole new direction.
….
As with her over-the-top efforts to blame Whittington, the victim, for getting in the way of Cheney’s birdshot blast, Armstrong’s line on liquor smells a little more like an attempt to cover for the vice president than full disclosure.

Viva La raza Blanco!!
He said he only had one beer BUT he didn’t say how many ounces that one beer was.
Wow, even Geraldo Rivera is gunning for Cheney. When Geraldo’s after you, you better watch your ass.
Hey, Ian!
You know what this proves?
White guys can’t handle their alcohol.
Especially Texans.
Nathan?
As a certified hunting safety instructor, would you say it is ever advisable to go hunting after drinking beer?
Just wondering.
“The image of him falling is something I will never be able to get out my mind,” Cheney said, somberly. “It was one of the worst days of my life.”
I don’t think it was a real great day for Harry Whittington, either.
Check out this partical trancscript from Democracy Now. I am not sure Armstrong is a good objective source on anything.(snip)ROBERT BRYCE: Exactly. And Katharine Armstrong has every reason to try and protect Cheney, not Whittington. You know, and the other part that really sticks in my mind on this whole thing is, you know, that Katharine Armstrong is part of the Republican political aristocracy here in Texas. And NBC just reported last night that Katharine Armstrong has, in fact, lobbied the White House. She was paid $160,000 and was doing that legal — that lobby work for Baker Botts.
Well, you know, the other part that really is amazing here is just how small the world of Dick Cheney and Baker Botts and Halliburton is. Baker Botts is a very powerful Texas law firm. James A. Baker III is Of Counsel to the firm. It was founded by his great-grandfather. Baker Botts represents Halliburton. Baker Botts’s lawyer William Jeffress also represents “Scooter” Libby in the criminal charges in Plamegate scandal. Baker Botts is, you know, perhaps the law firm with the closest ties to the Bush administration, and here is Katharine Armstrong hosting Cheney and having lobbied the White House directly on behalf of Baker Botts. The part that’s the most, I think, is the most stunning is Armstrong nor Baker Botts will disclose for whom she was lobbying the White House for Baker Botts.(snip)If I can just jump back to Armstrong real briefly, the other connection with Rove here is that Armstrong’s parents, Anne Armstrong and the late Tobin Armstrong were the people who originally backed Rove as a political consultant back in the early 1980s. When Karl Rove started Rove & Company, the capital that he needed to start that business came from the Armstrongs. Further, Rove now has an office in the White House. The office that he occupies used to be occupied by Anne Armstrong. She was a leading figure in the Nixon White House, and so she had an office in the Nixon White House and was one of the people, in fact, allegedly, who helped to convince Nixon to resign after the Watergate scandal.(snip)AMY GOODMAN: Anne Armstrong was a director of Halliburton when the board chose Dick Cheney to be the C.E.O.?
ROBERT BRYCE: She was. And the other thing that I find interesting about her and about the Halliburton connection is that for many years, while she was on the Halliburton board, she was also on the President’s Foreign Intelligence Advisory Board. Well, why is that interesting? Well, because the Foreign Intelligence Advisory Board has access to America’s most secret secrets. And there’s another connection that exists even today with Halliburton on the Foreign Intelligence Advisory Board, and that is that Ray Hunt, who is another — has close ties to the Bush White House, is also on the — sits on the board of Halliburton and sits on the Foreign Intelligence Advisory Board simultaneously, which was the case that Anne Armstrong had for many years. She sat on both the PFIAB and the Halliburton board at the same time.
Why is the Cheney shooting even a topic still? Al Gore sells the U.S. out to the Saudis, slams the US, commits treason by lying about Arabs being indiscriminately rounded up and that’s no big deal. Focusing on this hunting accident is taking away from the real issue of Gore aiding the enemy. Give Cheney his medal for shooting a lawyer and go after the real enemy, Al Gore.
“How much have you to drink tonight, sir?”
“Just a couple of beers, officer.”
Uh-huh.
Get It,
Sound strident much?
Go Cheney yourself! There that’s my Cheney joke so far. :)
CF, How’s that filibuster going for ya?
Didn’t Bushytail have the Saudis big wheels that were visiting him escorted to the airport and allow them to leave the country within minutes after 911?Actually, knowing what we know now, he should have put them in jail or sent them to Cuba and have them tortured. The Saudi Royalty family has been very friendly with the Bushytail family for years.
Well crumbs is better than nothing I guess.
Dick (the name is illustrative) Cheney is SORRY that he hurt someone! Wow now that is special! As CEO of Halliburton and in his capacity since his SPECIALTY has been hurting people.
Oh “get it” Al Gore is my president and you are taking his remarks out of context. No scratch that. Rush and Hannity took his remarks out of context and you as a mindless dumb ditto head are too stupid to do research.”Get it”? YOU are my enemy. Get it?
Oh Get it? Did you miss the pics of Georgie bush holding hands and tiptoeing to the Texas tumbledown ranch with the leader of Saudi Arabia?
Ya see ‘get it” you percieve Al Gore as working against America. How so? He is just a private citizen exercising his right to free speech. Uh Get it? Who does bush work for? It sure aint the interests of America.
Who better to tell your Quail tale to than Fox, a sympathetic ear for the one that got away.
Fox News is almost as good as having Ari Fletcher questioning the V.P.
Being a man of high character, Dick just didn’t think it’d be right to go on the Sunday hunt. What a guy.
After reading all the post, I came to the conclusion that there are very few bloggers here that show any decency or compassion at all. What I get out of this is the righters covering up for a really stupid accident, and the lefters more than glad to stick it to the VP.
For all the comedy written about this, I have no doubt that the person hurting the worst from this, othet than Whittington, is Cheney.
May none of you ever make a stupid mistake that ends in someone getting hurt or killed, like, gee, driving drunk, speeding, cleaning an unloaded weapon (there’s one that never killed anybody, huh?) or accidently puting peanut oil in salad dressing and serving it to someone who is allergic to peanuts (Boy, there’s another one that never killed anybody), to name a few “accidents”. Or, if it does happen, that your not the butt of this blog.
Walker,As usual, good points.
Melissa’s gratuitous slap at Fox News is not surprising. Bitter, Melissa?
Wait, we were sold out to the Saudi’s long before Al Gores speech.
I’m sure this was a horrible experience for Cheney.
He would have received a much more sympathetic response from people if he hadn’t tried to deal with this the way Katrina, Iraq and all the other scandals were handled.
Other than dealing with it, they tried to keep it secret. Then, their first statement was how Wittington shouldn’t have come up behind Cheney.
There it is. The, I am NOT responsible response.
While I sympathize with Cheney, once again. He and the administration are not above the law.
“For all the comedy written about this, I have no doubt that the person hurting the worst from this, othet than Whittington, is Cheney.”
JM, you’re right in the sense that this is how you or I would feel had we done it.
But what evidence do you have that Cheney is a decent guy? This is the man who got half a dozen deferments for Vietnam, a war he “supported.” This is the man who said on national TV that (as President of the Senate) he never once saw John Edwards on the floor, and within two hours, bloggers had photos showing Cheney SHAKING HANDS with Edwards on the floor of the Senate. This is the man who said in ‘91 that “toppling Saddam Hussein is not worth one American life.” This is the man who put troops in Saudi Arabia, the holy of holies for militant Muslims, and left them there after saying they would not remain one day longer than necessary. It was within months of stationing troops in Arabia that what was to become Al Qaeda turned against us, its former allies, and began a decade of terrorism.
This is a guy who STILL DRAWS A PAYCHECK FROM HALLIBURTON while Halliburton makes a 300 percent increase in profits for the last quarter.
The man has no shame and no integrity.
In other words, he’s a Bush Team player . . .
Ditto on the good points walker. However, the problems here are not just an “accident” or “mistake”. It is the bungling, the deception, the cover-up and the general “go f*** yourself” attitude of dead eye dick that causes the barbs.
If he had a history of compassion for others, a history of being open and honest, a history of admitting mistakes, a history of respecting the press and the public, then maybe he would not be treated so harshly now.
Instead of compassion, he has a pattern (no pun intended) of this “above the law, above the truth, above the little people” behavior. I think that makes him a fair target.
Cheney is the poster boy for practicing “paybacks are a bitch”. Just ask Joe Wilson and Valerie Plame. And now poor ol’ thin skinned dick is the victim of us big bad bloggers?
Baloney walker. Baloney :)
“Baloney walker. Baloney :)”
Oh, maybe, ksf, maybe. I don’t pretend to be able to read peoples minds. But let me bring up a little episode from liberal days of yore: That’s right, the ever lovable Teddy’s failing to report the auto accident that claimed the life of a young woman, and instead ran to his handler (read lawyer). Let’s see: Drinking was involved then, no gun, but something was smoking nonetheless, obfuscated the truth and failed to inform the press in a timely manner. O, wait . . . we’re talking about Teddy . . . never mind:-)
CNN timeline shows that Cheney shot the man at 6:50 pm on Feb 11th. Look at the info below and see that it would have been dark when he shot! Something that was not mentioned that there was low light … or even darkness.
I don’t know what the law in Texas is but just try shooting after dark in Kansas!

Good one nwks 18!!!! Looks like you scooped everyone! This should be better reported. I hope you don’t mind if I use it and credit you.
Ah JM…….I almost respeted you. But then ya gotta go prove yourself just another dittohead shouting “but LOOK LOOK WHAT THEY DID”.
Can you stick to the topic of the blog please?
By the way nwk, I’ve not seen you before so welcome! You seem better able to research than me. It would be interesting to know the weather conditions as well. That late in the evening, clouds in the west would have further reduced visibility.
Walker you missed me saying almost the same thing in a different way on a different thread.
The cons have coniptions because teddy delayed talking to the cops about his accident, but when dick fails to speak to law enforcement about his accident until the next day, it is just fine. Double standard. They are both wrong.
Maybe if Ted had a medical team riding shotgun ;) that horrible night, they could have saved Mary Jo just like they did Harry.
I am glad Harry seems to be improving, but he could easily die of complications. No one here is defending ted, and two wrongs dont make a right.
JRGore is your President, that’s the stupidest think I ever read in any blog. I did read Gores statement; he sincerely needs to be charged with treason. I think it funny that you Bush bashes dislike Rush and Hannity. They have audiences of millions of loyal great American listeners who agree that stupid liberals like you are our country’s worst enemy. My being your enemy is my pleasure. Bush has been doing a great job as President protecting the American people against you stupid liberals. Yea for the Bush Team.
Yeah, you “stupid enemy liberals!!” Stand right where you are while I throw NKJV bibles at you! Wait till I get Captain America to break down your doors and kick your a$$es for criticizing the great Ayatollah Bush and the Fox Propag… er.. News network! Didn’t you know Rush and Hannity are members of the Avengers too? Now you will surely taste our God-given superhuman conservative justice!
ROTFLMAO!!
CruX, did you see that even dick morris was linin’ up to throw darth cheney under the bus?
ks,LOL! Looks like everyone’s plotting open rebellion against Darth and the Empire! Don’t worry though, Geraldo and Morris have already received invitations to the next “quail hunt”.ROTFLMAO!!!
Lovely comparison, Frmgrrl. Teddy’s drunk driving and subsequent trying to hide it directly contributed to Mary Jo Kopechne’s death. The sheriff of Kennedy county (strange coincidence there), Roman Salinas, was interviewed by CNN and said his office WAS AWARE of the shooting accident that day.
Where is the delay? Failing to inform the news media is not a crime. Leaving the scene of an accident and failing to do anything while a young woman drowns is a crime.
Not much of a comparison. Kennedy’s failure to act resulted in a death. Cheney didn’t call Dan Rather immediately. Big difference.
Oh Iam shaking in my boots.
Getit is my enemy.
I gotta be real scared of a moron who justifies his arguement by saying that “Rush and Hannity have millions of loyal great American listeners who agree that Liberals like you are the enemy…..Yay team bush”
I am honestly shaking my head in pity for your stupidity and blind fealty while simutanously laughing at you.
Getit? You aint worth “enemy” status. You’re more like a nuiscance. It’s ok son go listen to the radio with Hank.
Ahh the right……..enlisiting more and more idiots everyday while the informed run headlong away from bush. Check a poll lately?
Cheney broke his silence with Brit Hume. That is akin to the head quarterback breaking his silence with the head cheerleader who he bangs after the interview.
To all of you,Cheney is being dragged in crap simply because he is a Republican. All of you sycophant liberals need to stop bashing people for the wrong reasons. The accident he was responsible for could have happened to anyone. He wasn’t trying to kill his friend and yet you act as if he were. No matter what your personal animosities are toward conservatives, this is opportunistic garbage and you are either too stupid to see it, or you are immoral opportunists. We need to rid ourselves of monkey-loving squirrel monkeys like CrusaderX and the rest of his affirmative action feces. I can’t believe I am paying tax money to equip a bunch of superliberals with mediocre IQ’s. This is why our country is losing its competitive edge around the world. Even foreign monkeys are better than the ones we see swinging from trees in our affirmative action greenhouses. (By the way, CrusaderX and his mental and physical mestizos have the gall to call Ian a “Hispanic” when that term means nothing at all. If someone who looks like a German is called a “Hispanic” and someone who looks like CrusaderX is also called a “Hispanic”, do words mean anything anymore? CrusaderX brags about his shit-colored skin and puts Ian down as being some kind of “closet self-hating” person, showing that CrusaderX has the circular logic of a Moebius strip!!)
Let’s face it- if Harry had shot Dick, he’d be residing at Gitmo forever!
I really think JR and CF is the same person. They can’t follow their own blogs, they both ramble incoherently about unrelated topics. They like to attack individuals who disagree with their senseless ramblings and are under the delusion they are informed. No matter what the polls say about Bush, JR/CF, he is the President and is doing a good job and I know this goes against one of your delusions but Gore is not the President.
Hahahahaha!I see the self-proclaimed non-racist, racist “anthropologist” has returned! Ian, get your mom off the computer!
LOLOLOLOLOL!!!
Dear truth/ian/ed/ali,
Don’t hate me because I look like Rico Suave and that I have a “white” girlfriend. Actually, you should know that she is a native Kansan, a contemporary at this fine law school. She’s a quintessential natural blond knockout. Her former boyfriend was black, I can’t help it that she likes dark meat. So don’t blame me! I know she just can’t get enough dark meat because she starts moaning in Spanish (ay yay yay!) when I fill her body’s every orifice with it. (and I do mean EVERY ORIFICE) So please get off my case will ya? It’s not my fault that she prefers darker skin tones to lighter ones, and it’s not my fault that I can satisfy a woman with my “dark meat”. So please, “don’t hate the playa, hate the game, baby.” Well, I hate to go, but I got a hot date with a blond bombshell in 20 minutes which will inevitably lead to a night of uninhibitted vigorous sex, again! Oh, and Ian’s mom, please check up on your son, he’s got his pants down to his ankles and ferociously sexually abusing himself in front of the monitor because of this post!
Cheers! :)
JR,
Was there any question Brit should have asked the VP that he did not?
Instead of just saying it was a crap interview, tell us how.
Truthregardess? I do not even PRETEND to know what you are beyond a rambling fool.
That makes you not much better than “getit” Oh get it? I am not CF. I wish I were. CF is one of the best “our”side has. But “getit” as you are “new” (maybe) to these blogs I need to tell ya that the multi-nic posters here are so far of a right wing nature. Which brings me to……
nathan? (Hank) (wow I am really slumming when I credit Nathank as the best bushie poster!)I did not watch the Brit Hume interview. While I do occasionally watch Fox news so that I understand the nature of bush propoganda, Hume is ……..well I just couldn’t watch. Now you may say that since I did not see that interview, I’ve no right to critique it. To a point I’ll credit you that. But Brit Hume is not regarded as worth watching by a large number of Americans. nathank? Think Dan Rather here. I’ve the same regard for Brit Hume that you have for Dan Rather.
That is the point isn’t it? Cheney isn’t remotely interested in the truth in this. He only cares how it plays to the base. So he went to the bottom of the base.
Cheney was drug through the dirt simply because he did his best to pretend nothing happened. When it was apparent they could no longer pretend they blamed the victim.
Cheney brought this on himself, with his usual NOT ME response.
What Cheney did in avoiding the sheriff and responsibility wouldnt’ have been acceptable to common citizens, why is it acceptable from the VP?
“you are immoral opportunists”
Hey, I resemble that remark! Why thank you!
CF, JR, Proudlib, Mother, etc. (I dont mean to leave out any members of the 101st Fighting Keyboarders.) I would go into battle with you all anytime. But it is really be cruel to enter a battle of wits with these sons and daughters of wingnuttia. Kinda like shooting quail on a canned hunt. BTW, do you think they blindfold the birds before they put ‘em in the blue rock thrower?
Sorry Sum1, and other sane people here, I didnt mean to forget anyone!
Hell, ksfarmgrrl, us girls could whip the wingnuts here with one breast tied behind our back. Probably would be a lot of fun at that. But CF, JR and Proudlib could join in just so they could show those pups what real men are like. That part, I would probably pay to watch! Of course, after we got done with them, there wouldn’t be much left to teach, would there (wink).
High five mother!
Harry’s fault for coming up on Dick’s “blind side”.
Jed,I only have a few words for you. Lay off those who are innocent. As for the rest of you left-wing banana chompers, you can preside over the ashes of this one great civilzation. That includes you, CruX. As for your girlfriend, by your own admission she graduated from a black man to a shit-brown one, you. There is a trend there, so within a year or so she will have progressed to a white one. Look out Ian Santiago, here she comes!!! hahahahahahaha. I just wet myself!!!
It appears Ian has an apprentice, and a knuckle-dragging neocon at that.
I still like the joke about satan’s bracelet. It says “what would cheney do?”
CrusaderX,What happened to the Holy Trinity, my Mestizo buddy? You said Ian, JM, and the knuckle-dragging neocon were the same person. Could it be you are suffering from delusions? Paranoia? What do you think, Ian? I hear CrusaderX is trying to imitate Michael Jackson so he can get a white baby. In the meantime he calls everybody else a racist. Anyway, CruX, I think you need to go back out to get your affirmitive action handout. What do you call yourself? A Filiprico? Or Puertopino? Has the government invented a specious category for you yet? I am impressed that you can at least read English. Maybe in a few more thousand years your kind will be able to think logically. Let’s hope so.
Hidalgo indian eye.You guys are all related aren’t you? truth is Ian’s mommy, and hidalgo is his gay-cowboy lover.
http://home.cinci.rr.com/justamerican/skinColor.htm
EVERYONE HERE WHO USES RACIAL DESIGNATORS, I DARE YOU TAKE THIS TEST!
CrusaderX,You recently boasted about your blonde princess in a most obscene way. How she liked “dark meat”, etc., etc. If DARK MEAT is so good, why didn’t you go after an ebony princess instead? Why did you choose a white person? I posit that you crave that pink meat and are simply glad that your girl slave is still learning the ropes. You are a hypocrite. Shame on you, you stinking Melanesian!!Hahahahahah!
whoa whoa slow down there!Just because I like some vanilla, doesn’t mean I don’t like to taste some chocolate and caramel.
MMMMmmmmMMMMMmmmMMMmmmmmm!!!LOLOLOLOLOLOLOL!
