Join a ‘live’ discussion of State of Union address

We’re going to try an experiment Tuesday night: A ‘live’ blog discussion during President Bush’s State of the Union address. What we will do is start a string, and then you can post your reactions — what you agree with, what you don’t — while the speech is going on. And, of course, the comments can continue after the speech. Hope you are available and will join the discussion.

*sigh*….I can almost hear the verbal equivalent of rotten vegetables being stockpiled now. People salivating over a chance to attack. No matter what he says/does, he is going to be vicously attacked here.

He could unveil a proven cure for cancer, and he would be ridiculed on this blog.

No, I am not totally supportive of him, his administration, or his policies. By the same token, the outright hatred and viscousness of the attacks are tiresome.

Enjoy. I am going to go read a book.

I will probably respond after the speech. I don’t want to be too distracted.

Clinton was also attacked after every speech he made. Why wouldn’t fair turnaround be in order? If nothing else shrub deserves it just for being a such a major idiot. The stuff he tries to get away with I learned around age 5 doesn’t work.

Ray,You are correct about the cure for cancer announcement. We know he is nothing more than a messenger with poor public speaking skills. If republicants wanted their guy treated with respect, they should have treated ole’ Bill a little better. Pre-emptive war against a country that didn’t do anything to us, historic deficits, and shredding of our constitution make an oval office bj seem small. Republicants treatment of Clinton permanently lowered the bar of civility toward politicians in this country. They really opened a pandoras box.

It’s been pointed out that the Iraq war has cost $17,000 per capita Iraqi, which is 8 times the per capital Iraqi income. To wit, if we had just given Iraqis war-cost equivalent aid and guidance, we could have made friends, instead of inciting hatred. It has been pointed out that we could have helped the moderate Palestinian leaders, through financial aid that they would have disbursed. Instead, our administration discredited them, driving Palestinians to vote for Hamas.George Bush doesn’t believe in global warming, which predicts that winter temperatures will rise. What do you think about this winter weather? My lawn is half green at the end of January. Anybody ever seen this before?Kansans have a long history of being given choices, and making the wrong choice instead of the right choice. In other cases, they are not given a choice, such as in not being allowed to vote in presidential primaries, so that they don’t get to see candidates and make informed choices. They think they are voting for somebody who will be anti-gay, but nobody ever tells them that his VP’s daughter is a lesbian (whom the VP does not repudiate), and the Commander in Chief sent his own daughter to Yale, the most pro-gay-rights university on the planet. Then too, his other daughter went to U Texas-Austin, a school that would be right at home in California. Maybe he doesn’t really believe in the things he wants you to believe he believes.John Dean went to Yale. John Kerry went to Yale. GWB went to Yale. Billary Clinton went to Yale. You’ve been given so many choices, it makes the head spin, doesn’t it?

Like a wife might say to her husband when he points out what he did two weeks ago, “So what have you done for me lately?”. Clinton and how he was treated is a non-issues, that was long ago and is not important to what is going on today. If someone is still sore over Clinton’s treatment and is paying attention only for that reason. “Moron” comes to mind, I will plan on being here not to avenge Clinton but because I care about this country as a whole. If all you see when you look at your fellow Americans is a Republican, a Democrat, a Conservative or a Liberal. Then you are not seeing your country and its future, you have forfeited your birthright. If all you think about when something happens that effect this country is whether it was one party or the other that caused it and not the effect upon this country. you than do not deserve to be called an American. I will watch this man speak, even though I did not vote for his re-election, even though I might become anger at what he said, even though I believe him to be a liar. I will watch him because he is the President of the United States and what he said will effect my country. My world and my family! The course of this country is in his hands and I care more about that then I do anything else at that moment that I could watch or read.

I would ask this of everyone involved:

Lets talk about what he is saying and make legitimate complaints or praise.

Lets not wast 50 postings with saying he is an idiot, Bush sucks, what a moron, he is a liar…

I guess it is kind of wishful thinking on my part, but figured I would at least ask.

My guess is that for every one counterpoint offered here tonight there will be at least 10 posts of nothing but name calling.

Nathan–75 percent of what he says will be unsubstantiated puffery like the “engine of growth is chugging forward” or they’ll be promises about things in the future (like the “human sex trade” and “AIDS in Africa”) that you’ll never hear about again.

The other 25 will be based on fact. Those statements will either be false, misleading or outright lies.

So I won’t be calling him an idiot or a moron. I’ll be calling him what he is: a liar.
