Hamas’ victory in Palestinian elections, the uncertain leadership picture in the wake of Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon’s stroke, Iran’s threats to wipe Israel off the map — there isn’t much to inspire hope this week about the prospects for lasting peace in the region. And with President Bush repeating Thursday that Hamas “is a party with which we will not deal,” the United States’ role going forward is a big question mark. There’s always a chance that Hamas, having risen to power through democracy, will find its way to appreciate and respect the need for peace and cooperation with Israel. But the United States and the rest of the world shouldn’t count on it.

I am confused,I thought that the Bush regime wanted democratic elections in the arab world? Hmmm
V.L.R.B!!!
Why are we surprised that a people in bondage will become radicalized? We negotiate with the successors to the terrorist Stern Gang and call them allies; why can we not talk with those who resist the Stern Gang?
Ben Huie,
Don’t be so blasted naive; our government is being run by the same zionist terrorists!
V.L.R.B!!!
Hamas could turn out to be the Palestinian version of Sinn Fein, but I wouldn’t take that bet.
Since they are the elected leaders, they will need to be acknowledged as such. But destroying Israel can’t be on the agenda.
Where is Ed these days? This is right up his alley (not withstanding his truly insane views about the Holocaust).
I am not Ed but I will give it a shot.
His Eminence Bishop Williamson recognises that the “holocaust” is all Jewish lies, invented as a scheme to further Jewish aggression against the nations. In 1989, Notre-Dame-de-Lourdes church in Sherbrooke, Canada, Bishop Williamson stated, regarding this devilish concoction of the Jews:
“there was not one Jew killed in the gas chambers. It was all lies, lies, lies. The Jews created the Holocaust so we would prostrate ourselves on our knees before them and approve of their new State of Israel…. Jews made up the Holocaust, Protestants get their orders from the devil, and the Vatican has sold its soul to liberalism.”

LMAO Rage, was that what you were looking for?
The mission of Hamas has always been the extermination of all jews: http://www.jpost.com/servlet/Satellite?c=JPArticle&cid=1136361020700&pagename=JPost%2FJPArticle%2FShowFull
It seems unlikley their mission will change now that they are in power. In fact, it will probably accelerate it.
Thumbs down! The Palestinian did vote the party in, so they have to live with that concequence.
I doubt Hamas has anything to offer in the name of peace. Just as any other radical leftist terrorist group, they cannot be trusted.
Says Joe Williams, hopeful would-be fascist suck-up.
Uh, yeah, Joe . . . what exactly about Hamas is “leftist”?
Their rigid religious ideology? Their connection to the “leftists” in Iran?
Help me out with the connection between big government that helps society through regulation and social security and Hamas.
What a problem it is for the right wing these days now that Soviet Union has fallen. They used to be able to label everything they didn’t like as “communist.”
Now they have to settle for “leftist” or “liberal.”
Doesn’t have quite the same panache, does it.
BTW, the hope for peace was destroyed when Ariel Sharon went to the temple mount about 6 or 8 years ago in a gesture that could be compared to Bush spray painting “eat me” on the Washington monument.
He incited violence, and violence there was.
The Israelis have all the power in Palestine. If they want peace, they know how to get it–give the Palestinians something to live for.
If they don’t want peace, they can continue doing exactly what they’re doing.
The people with no power–the Palestinians–should in no way be held responsible for a “lack of peace.”
Typical Bush diplomacy. We should be inviting the Hamas leaders to Washington, wine and dine them, and “encourage” them to see the positive consequences of peaceful coexistance with Israel. Bush blew it with North Korea, now He’ll blow it with the Palestinians. This is why we need a woman in the white house, the ego doesn’t get in the way and there might be less power stuggle, more results.
“Struggle”, I really need to preview before I post!
As long as the US continues to support the tiny band of extremists who rule over a million people in Hebron we have no claim of wanting peace.
Bush has talked the talk, but now that it’s time to walk the walk, he seems to have a stone in his shoe.Hamas is the clear winner in a fair election. Isn’t that what we’re fighting for? It’s up to us to welcome them as a duly elected government, and respect the decision of the people.
ProudLib, you don’t even know what leftism is. I know you are a leftist and it makes you upset that you believe in most of what Hamas believes, but that is you.
Notice! I didn’t say Liberal, but leftist. Leftism is the political spectrum that rejects capitalism and individualism. They also impose stict regulations and are untolerable. That is Hamas.
Liberalism rejects capitalism and individualism, but are more tolerable and more freedom conscious.
Why I call you a leftist, because you would like to see a world that everybody is a liberal and suscribes to the liberal ideology. If you were just liberal, you would respect libertarians and conservatives and engage in good debate and include and listen to others and incorporate compromises on issues.
I’m a libertarians, but I’m tolerable (to a point – I’m not perfect), and I welcome liberalism and conservatism and I like good things about both of them.
You, on the other hand! Want to see the fall and demise of anybody that is not liberal or leftist.
JoeW.,
You know as much about “liberal” and “leftist” as I know about opera.
Hamas isn’t leftist, more like a theocracy, the junior Taliban. They’re anti-science, anti-diversity, anti-any non Wahabbi Islam.
Sounds more RIGHT wing than anything else. See Ralph Reed, Falwell, Robertson, et al.
Damoon,
Why don’t you go ahead and invite Hamas over to your house now?
Perhaps then you could show them the error of their ways and make right all the wrongs of the middle east…
You don’t think Bush should go see Putin, but Hamas? Invite them to the whitehouse!
Give me a break…
Mrs. Bhutto, the former leader of Pakistan, has pointed out that the Taliban has migrated from Afghanistan to her country.
Terrorism is not new. It derives from state actions. The Romans crucified little people, like Jesus, and murdered Christians in the Coloseum to teach a lesson: conform or die. The British could not take the fortress of Quebec directly from the French in the 1750’s. So they commited terrorism, burning the homes of little people who lived around Quebec’s surrounding areas. They gave Indians smallpox-contaminated blankets.
In WWII, we fire bombed Japanese cities to terrorize mostly women, elderly men and children who were non-combatants. In essence, America’s leaders decided this: “We are not going to engage in hand-to-hand combat with your soldiers, we’re going to kill your wives, children and parents.”
This works. This is why the arabic strategists are using it.
We have a faild plan ….. and we are going to stick to it!
Major failure with Hamas some of the worst terrorists taking charge of our forced democratic elections. What do we do now that our brain trust running the show just brain farted?
We invade Iraq to not find WMDs while neighboring Iran increases efforts to buid a nuke and declears its will to destroy America.
What will be different when we liberate Iraq from the centuries old conflict of waring factions from with in that country? Will our new and expensive democracy in Iraq be another example of fail brain trusts continuing to mis-lead our nation to no end? Why do we spend all the hundreds of billions of dollars and the lives of so damn many bright dead U.S. kids? Do we have a plan we can win? Why don’t we get tough and get this war on so we can get it over and go on with America? Or will this just be another total recent failure for us as a nation?
Uncle Sam
Nathan, Thet’re coming over for BBQ on Saturday. You and Hank want to come, too?
When did I say that Bush shouldn’t see Putin? Back up your statement. We have nothing to lose by trying to reel in and influence Hamas, they’re going to head Palestine whether we like it or not. The last thing we need to do is throw up another wall and call them evil. Bush is such a moron, especially when it comes to dealing with the rest of the world.
Damoon,
How exactly do you expect the Bush regime to reel in Hamas? If I were a Palestinian and saw the zionists steal my land and shoot young unarmed children in the head then I certainly would not let some jackass in Washington DC dictate anything to me!
The zionists have compromised our Nation and the fools in DC still think that they have credibility in the region and can act as an honest broker? Does that really sound sane to you?
V.L.R.B!!
It doesn’t hurt to try. What do we have to lose if we extend our hand? Do you think Bush’s way of dealing with Hamas is going to be effective? How well did it work with North Korea? We sure showed them, didn’t we!!No, I don’t believe our country is totally run by the Jews, so I guess I have no credibility with you or Ed (one and the same?).
“Thus an Orthodox Jew learns from his earliest youth, as part of his sacred studies, that Gentiles [non-Jews] are compared to dogs.”
How are you different, Ian? You’re as much (if not more) of a bigot as any Orthodox Jew I’ve ever seen.
Hamas ran as the “Change and Reform” party, largely abandoning their fiery rhetoric. The convention wisdom is that many Palestians voted for them to send a message to Fatah, not necessarily in support of Hamas’s extremist agenda. Unfortunately, I doubt Hamas will give a damn about that. We’ll see.
Arent the sspx catholics the ones who believe the true pope lives in kansas?
All of the popes since Vatican 2 have been anti-popes!
V.L.R.B!!
Another reason Hamas did well is that they are not seen as being in bed with the despotic rulers of the Palestinian people. Fatah has come to be seen as both corrupt and as being collaborators with those who rule the daily lives of a people in bondage.
kfg,I think you’re confusing the sspx catholic pope with the flying speggetti monster:-)
No, the flying spagetti monster is much more benevolent, especially to midgets and pirates!
LOL Walker, no, the Flying Spagetti Monster has more credibility!! HEE HEE
The sspx catholics do believe everything since vatican 2 is invalid and the real pope is this guy named michael, i think, who lives in some little town near you.
Hey Ian, wanna buy some fish? Lent is coming up real soon!! I also have some st. christopher medals really cheap.
Sorry Walker, near wichita. I forget that you live in Joplin.
