Good ideas from Gingrich on lobbyists, Iran, bipartisanship

Calling for the GOP to be the party of reform, not just the “party of pork barrel,” former House Speaker Newt Gingrich brought fresh thinking to three important issues Sunday on CBS’ “Face the Nation”:
– Require that every lobbying activity be listed on the Web, including golfing outings and dinners out. Even better, possibly ban political fundraisers in Washington, D.C., when Congress is in session. “I think this whole system has grown, frankly, a little sick with insiders raising money for insiders to re-elect insiders to do favors for insiders,” he said.
– Take seriously the threat represented by Iran’s new president, who denies the Holocaust happened and who wants to defeat Anglo-Saxons and eliminate Israel or at least move it to Europe. “I think it’s as serious as the problem with Adolf Hitler in 1935,” Gingrich said.
– Launch the 2008 presidential race by holding only bipartisan meetings in Iowa and New Hampshire, “so you have real discussion and everybody’s in the same room talking.”

    I’ll give him 2 for 3.

The “caliphate” threat is one that the GOP has way too much invested in.

    Plus it’s incredible.

Even if AQ snuck in a gross of dirty bombs and somehow managed to set them all off inside our borders, it wouldn’t prove a decisive battle against Western Civilization. Hardly.

Osama bin Laden is no Attila and President Bush’s GWOT is no Chalons, although they’ve got tons invested in making Americans believe both.

    Oh, he was.

So . . . talk is still cheap, isn’t it.

Yes, Mr. Lizard was not only in Congress for 20 years, he was the first Republican speaker in 40 years. What an opportunity to clean up corruption!

Under Newt’s careful oversight, Democratic lobbyists were gradually purged from K street. . . .and replaced with Republicans. It got to the point where lobbyists were actually WRITING LEGISLATION. Not much has changed since then.

And now, the new Happy-Fun-Newt is once again crowing about reform. Thanks, dude: We’ve heard this song before.

“fresh thinking to three important issues” That’s a laugh.

” Take seriously the threat represented by Iran’s new president, who denies the Holocaust happened and who wants to defeat Anglo-Saxons and eliminate Israel or at least move it to Europe. “I think it’s as serious as the problem with Adolph Hitler in 1935,” Gingrich said.

First: How is “denying the Holocaust happened ” a threat to anyone, with the exception of Israel’s constant claim of being ” the victim, ” which flies in the face of why millions of Palestinians are living in the retched squalor of refugee camps where they are daily ” targeted and killed,” and have been humiliated, abused, tortured, murdered, with homes bulldozed, olive groves uprooted { over a million so far } farms destroted and land stolen. That process has been going on for over 60 years and continues today, unabated.

Second: Whose the real victim?… The World’s greatest superpower, the United States has enough nuclear weapons to incinerate the entire planet 10 times over, and has also declared Iran to be a part of the “axis of evil” thus making it a target for destruction. Does that represent concern for Iran?… The President of Iran wants Israel to go away?… You bet, so would you after all they’ve done to upset the Middle East, if you were in his shoes. Just look at the number of innocent people murdered by the United States in Iraq, without a good enough reason that will fill-up a bucket of spit.

Gingrich playing the sick ” Hitler Card ” to Iran’s standing in defiance of the United States, which has been financing the slaughter of Arabs through the rogue State of Israel, and busy looking the other way as resolution after resolution condemning Israel’s behavior is defeated by a single vote in the UN Security Council is certainly cause for Iranian alarm. Is Iran the nation busily violating International Law and the Geneva Conventions? The United States is afraid to renew it’s membership in the World Court in the Hague in Brussels for fear of both Bush and Sharon being indicted for war crimes and rank genocide. Bush has said so.

Is Gingrich prepared to kick AIPAC out of Washington, And if the FBI raided those quarters, how many members of congress would be jailed by what was found? Well by the tone of Gingrich sucking-up to Israel that seem unlikely. How much was Gingrich paid by Israeli-supporters for his “visit” to ” CBS’ “Face the Nation?”

Aside: I’ve noticed that Cindy Sheehan has put the fear of God into to the Israeli Hardliners, Rod Dreher of the Dallas Morning News, Charles Krauthammer of the Washington Post and on down the line. Notice how Bill O’Reilly went straight for her throat.

Those PNACers are seemingly excessively worried about her.

This is a life and death struggle for world conquest, the best shot PNACers have ever had.

It reminds we of Michael Cohouae {spl} when the King stole his horse.

PL,If your post hadn’t refered to “talk is cheap”, I might have agreed with you, however, since the Newter has nothing to lose, why not come up with some good ideas, hmmmm? Where are your ideas? Got any better? Agree with Newt? Disagree?

My personal opinion is that he is dead on on all three:

    1. Lobbyists are out of control: Fact. Why not make them show how every dollar is spent via an online website? Would it be a problem for the states voters to know how their favorite son is catering to the lobbyists? Only to the extent that they probably wouldn’t be allowed back in the state.

    2. Iran is trying to produce nuclear weapons, as well as obtain the technology to build missles capable of reaching both Israel and Western Europe. Put them together with what this nut case has said his intentions are, and Hitler would look like a minor mass murderer by comparison. The man plans to use the weapons, if he is allowed to obtain or build them.http://today.reuters.com/news/newsArticle.aspx?type=topNews&storyID=2006-01-04T022026Z_01_KWA408404_RTRUKOC_0_US-NUCLEAR-IRAN-REPORT.xml&archived=False

3.Open true bipartisan meetings. The greatest idea to come along yet. The problem is, you would need quality, open minded people in them. Where do you find such People, Washington? I doubt that.

JM, you wrote:2. Iran is trying to produce nuclear weapons, as well as obtain the technology to build missles capable of reaching both Israel and Western Europe.–Agreed

Put them together with what this nut case has said his intentions are, and Hitler would look like a minor mass murderer by comparison.–Doubtful. You assume he has both sufficient weapons and distribution infrastructure to murder something upwards of 50 million humans before the West could stop him. Not likely, even if Iran possesses a sufficient means of distribution (they do not).

The man plans to use the weapons, if he is allowed to obtain or build them.–And this is where you fall completely off the edge. You are arguing that even though neither Russia nor China used nuclear weapons, throughout the 35+ years of the cold war, that Iran would. Remember, the US didn’t give up our nukes, and we DO have an extraordiarily sophisticated, as well as sufficient, means of distributing them. You must assume Ahmadinejad is insane. I don’t see that at all.

Having nuclear weapons is not the same as using them. I’m not saying that Ahmadinejad doesn’t warrant containment, I’m just saying that for the next decade plus he in no way represents the threat you say he does.

I disagree with your conclusion: I think you and Newt both wildly overestimate the risk of nuclear threat from Iran to the US and Israel.

A nuclear-free Middle East would be a good thing. Unfortunately, the US has helped nuclearize the region.

  16. Ed Friedemann
    Posted January 4, 2006 at 2:03 pm | Permalink

Some Idea of what would happen to Iran if Iran used nuclear weapons against the United States.

    The 20 megaton H-bomb exploded in the Marshall Islands left of hole in the ocean floor 6500 ft. in diameter { 1 Mile equals 5280 ft. }

Our nuclear submarines carry 24 missiles with warheads up to 100 megatons. And can deliver those warheads from just about anywhere in the world. Iran knows it can be reduced to a gas.

Iranian concerns are about being attacked by Israel, and feel they need a deterrent. There are fully aware that they have been targeted for destruction and are currently being threatened by both the United States and Israel.

It may satisfy Israel’s right-wing greed but not ordinary common sense to pursue current policies.

Making a negotiated peace with the Arabs is a far better course of action than the current asinine policy being pushed by Israel and pursued by the United States.

Some might argue that Iran might already have nuclear weapons and that gamble is not worth the outcome.

no offer of peace is being offered, which addresses Iranian concerns.

The PNAC plan is self-destructive nonsense. There is only one possible conclusion and that is a catastrophic result for the People of the United States.

Flike,Very sound arguments and an excellent post.

I hope to hell I am wrong about Ahmadinejad and what his intentions are. To me, this is like the battle raging over global warming: Some believe it exists, some don’t. I personally think Iran is a loose cannon, and that they would use nuclear weapons if they had both them and the means to deliver them.

I also believe that their first target would be Israel. My belief is that most, if not all, Muslim countries want an end to Israel, for the sole reason they are occupying what is perceived as Muslim soil. I am not saying that all muslim countrie want a violant end to Isreal, but there are fanatical factions that will stop at nothing to end the countries existance, including using nuclear weapons. That, in my opinion, includes Iran and puts Ahmadinejad at the top of the list.

The LAST thing I want to do is to say I told you so. That would mean that millions have already died. That is unacceptable.

Ed, this is a little belated, but do you go on and on and on (I think you’ve heard that before. . . repeatedly).

I do think denying the Holocaust is a very bad thing. I also think “acting out” on the Palestinians isn’t a healthy or ethical way to deal with it–I don’t know the absolute numbers, but I wouldn’t be terribly surprised. I do think some Palestinian actions haven’t been terribly ethical either, but I can grok the balance of power. And, like most military conflicts, those are the decisions of the “leaders”–and the rest pay the consequences.

And I am seriously pissed at Bush for ignoring the REAL chance for reform in Iran. But no: Axis of friggin’ Evil–let’s ignore what’s really happening in Iran–we have our own agenda.

So now they have a hard-right mullah-blowing nut for president. Absolutely predictable. Where was Newt in 2002?
