Business OK with State BOE?

Few believe that the Kansas State Board of Education’s evolution follies have been good for the state’s image beyond its borders. Yet Kansas Chamber of Commerce and Industry president and CEO Lew Ebert (in photo) recently ducked a legislator’s question about the economic development implications of the evolution flap, according to the Harris News Service: “We’re probably not going to speak on that topic,” Ebert told Rep. Candy Ruff, D-Leavenworth, during a House committee meeting. What about the jokes and editorial cartoons it generated? Don’t they risk discouraging science-related companies from coming to Kansas? “I don’t know if people around the country pay much attention to that,” he said. He wishes.

Maybe he knows that it is all just the overblown silliness and paranoia for the subject that Rhonda and crew is famous for.

Silliness? When the BoE is dangerously close to violating federal separation of church and state? When the BoE hires a totally unqualified person to head the state school system? When the BoE members spend taxpayer money on thinly disguised campaign trips? When a BoE member takes a family vacation at state expense and only pays back some of the money after a substantial outcry? When the BoE chairman charges schools with distributing pornography (which is a felony) by recommending literary classics?

This BoE is beyond silliness. They are out of control, dangerous and (with few exceptions of some people with brains) need to be replaced.

Not to mention that the BOE refined science to meet its own narrow political agenda.

    Uh, that’s *all* of science.

That should read “the BOE redefined acience to meet its own narrow political agenda.”

    Redefined *all* of science.

Just shows that the Kansas Chamber has nothing to do with small business or even most large businesses. Take a look at their membership lists and then their contributions list. Follow the money.

If you cant acknowledge the damage BOE had done to Kansas’ reputation as a serious place to do business, you are not living in the real world. All the money spent over the last 10 years on marketing for the state just went down the drain with the BOE shenanigans. You know, Kansas as (fill in the blank) as you think.

But then the Kansas Chamber would know nothing about that. When was the last time they did anything to actually bring business to Kansas? Nope. They just lobby for the Kochs and the other “cut taxes on the rich” crowd. The chamber has Grover’s fingerprints all over. It is a tool of the conservatives, evangelicals, and republicans.

The Kansas Chamber. As in denial as you think.

You go, farmgirl. As another small businessman, I agree completely. My first year in business, I joined the Chamber. The next year I realized I could use the $350 for something a lot more effective. BTW, that was a well-written diatribe.

check out the above link (cut and paste) to find out the worst jobs in science according to Popular Science magazine.

Check out the third worst job in science… it is a Kansas High School Biology Teacher… only behind a manure inspector and a human lab rat!

What damage can this do? unlimited.

Ray says about the KS BOE:”This BoE is beyond silliness. They are out of control, dangerous and (with few exceptions of some people with brains) need to be replaced.”

Kind of a strong statement about your fellow Republicans, wouldn’t you think? You know, those folks would probably call you a RINO since you’re obviously not on the right side of the culture war.

Is it that they are not TRUE Repubs, or is it you, who is not a TRUE Repub, Ray? Tell us how you resolve this cognitive dissonance.

Very true farmgirl and madder. The Chamber (and their lapdog Wichita Business Journal) have absolutely no concern for the needs of small business nor education. Companies are suffering due to low skill level availability but all the Koch family wants is to “out-Haiti” Haiti.

    Steven..

My voter registration is nobody’s business but mine. Why would you care?

Just because I am not fond of bigger and more intrusive government does not mean that I worship at the altar of any political party.

I have been called a Libertarian – Republican, a RNO, independent, etc. Why is it you feel you must place a label at all? I have my own mind, my own values and my own ability to think for myself.

    Ray,

    Good for you.

The act of fitting togther economic and social conservatives is not real easy as some KS Repubs are finding out.

To mangle an LBJ metaphor, I think there are large volumes of urine being spread inside the big tent of the Kansas Republican party. And, dealing with this problem seems to be causing some moderates there considerable consternation.

I’d be lying, if I said I was not enjoying the show.

KSBOE has only been good business for comedians and cartoonists.

Does anybody remember back in the day when the jokes were about Okies and hillbillies? Not anymore, they’ve evolved.
