It seems Americans can agree on one thing — that they deserve to know the details of Jack Abramoff’s White House meetings. A new poll shows that 76 percent of Americans believe the Bush administration should come clean about the contacts. And that includes 2 in 3 Republicans and 8 in 10 Democrats. It’s nice to know that members of both parties recognize the need to know what the crooked lobbyist was up to at the White House.

Interesting poll numbers, but I don’t see this going anywhere. This Whitehouse has established a habit of secrecy, and nothing the Democrats can do is going to change that. How do you force a sitting president to release information if he refuses? The Courts? Yeah, sure.Any politician who points the finger about taking money for services is just another example of the pot calling the kettle black. Yes, Abramoff is a Republican scandal, but when the rubber hits the road, Democrat or Republican, they all take the money. Abramoff is just an over the top example of what they all do.I’m sure there’ll be a lot of talk, but Congress isn’t going to bite the hand that feeds them. Look for new laws with loop holes big enough to drive trucks (loaded with money) through.
I didn’t know if there were be any play on that poll or not.
I’ve mentioned before that I’m waiting for the DOJ’s report on why the whitehouse removed a US attorney from an investigation into Abramoff in Guam.
There are many questions that deserve answers. Until Americans pull their heads from the sand they’ve buried them in, they will remain unanswered.
This poll is welcoming, gives a spark of hope, that maybe… just maybe people are starting to pay attention.
…and the silence of Joe Blow and Joe Williams is profound. I guess us “stoop-id” liberals arent the only ones who would like answers.
You all really should remember Richard “executive privelege” Nixon. The cover-up can be way worse than the crimes. (notice the plural here)
Besides, joe blow and joe williams, if the preznit has nothing to hide, why not release the hounds, er, I mean the records? Us liberals are so damn “stoop-id” we couldnt make political hay out of it anyway, right?
Only terrorists have something to hide. Law abiding citizens should release all their info, unless they are the liar in chief I guess.
Now who is “stoop-id” boys?
I see the poll was by those notoriously liberal democrat organizations, the Washington Post and ABC News. That will be reason enough for joe and his other brother joe to reject the results. Besides that, the poll was probably “scientific” and we know what Kansas thinks of science.
Yep . . . great blog. Let’s see: Abramoff can’t be trusted, the sun still rises in the east, Bush is still an idiot and Clinton is still looking for the true meaning of “is.” SSDD.
JM, 40 percent of Americans still trust Bush.
This blog’s for them.
From the LA Times, Aug 8, 2005 via Bellaciao:http://bellaciao.org/en/article.php3?id_article=7466
WASHINGTON — A US grand jury in Guam opened an investigation of controversial lobbyist Jack Abramoff more than two years ago, but President Bush removed the supervising federal prosecutor, and the probe ended soon after.
SF Chronicle, Jan 27, 2006:http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?file=/c/a/200...
The investigation into Jack Abramoff, the disgraced Republican lobbyist, took a provocative new turn Thursday when the Justice Department said the chief prosecutor in the inquiry would step down next week because he had been nominated to a federal judgeship by President Bush.

Looks like Bush Baby already has a history of protecting the Republicans’ most successful fund-raiser.
Wow! The personal attacks are arye. Falling silent? I just got on the Internet just a few minutes ago. What I’m I suppose to do, be watching this blog 24/7?
I have no idea why you grouped me in all of this. I’m not even a Republican or Conservative. I also never defended Abramoff. So no! I don’t feel stoop-id.
Abramoff can take every Republican in Congress including Bush to prison for all I care. If they broke the law, they need to suffer the consequences of prison time. Looks like one Republican is going, maybe a second in Ohio. That is all I know for now until this is all done.
We’ve been needing lobbyist reform forever. But I doubt much will change. Too many people, staffers, former congress people make millions being one. So it’s not going to change very much. That is the sad part. I mean, what would Senator Boxer and Reid do with their family? Since their sons make millions being lobbyist themselves. Legal? Yes! Unethical? Yes!
So who feels stoop-id now? Calling me out like that for no reason. Just because I’m not liberal doesn’t make me a blind Republican supporter. I’m what you call a “Free Thinker”, I do not conform or blindly follow political parties or subscribe to the “follow-the-crowd” mentality of left-wing/right-wing politics.
I’m no sheep. I’m an alpha wolf and believe what I believe regardless of what everybody else thinks. Proudlib is a sheep. He would be really easy to control, brainwash, and do what ever orders somebody tells him to do. Most people are like that.
But I will give ksfarmgrrl the benefit of the doubt. You are a bit more free thinking, for a liberal that’s a compliment. ;) But you seem to have a spirited belief. I like reading your posts and enter into debate and discussion.
But sheep like ProudLib and CF posts are boring and nothing but blind orders from the left wing political machines *YAWN*. So redundant.
And oh! By the way, I hope Tom Delay goes to prison, because he is a crooked politican and a very bad person and I’ve been saying that for years (of course not on this blog) but people who know me. What he did to re-redistrict Texas is only the tip of the iceberg. (a little off-topic)
ProudLib! I need by feet rubbed. *Sticks feet out*
I bet 80% of the public thought they needed to know all the details of the BTK murder trial too, but it was a matter settled in court.
I know you journalist feel that everything from the first lady’s underwear color to the codes to launch the Nuclear Missles should be public information, but too bad.
Keep crying though, taking your polls, doing what it is you do best, meanwhile this will end up like every other factless and baseless allegation against Bush…
Forgotten.
Do you ever get tired of grasping at straws Melissa?
Joe, I agree you never defended Jack, but you and Ray spent a lot of bandwidth the other day defending bush from charges concerning his relationship with Abramoff.
I know you call yourself a moderate, and we have even agreed on some issues, even though there is nothing moderate about me! :) You are always calling us “leftist liberals” stoop-id. That’s why you had the bug somewhere, right? Dont make me post those comments here. You wont like hearing your own words.
I am not attacking you Joe. At least you post and participate and speak your mind without apology. I might be attacking something you say, but I am not so foolish as to attack an alpha wolf like you! (grin)
Nathan,
Now that we’ve seen Bush show Presidential elections demostrably don’t matter, polls do.
Joe Williams,
You call ME a sheep? Well, good grief. Unlike you, at least I can say that the stuff I find and recycle on this blog isn’t the bought and paid for conventional spin put out by the corporate media and right-wing think tanks. My patterns of media consumption patronize sources that are way, way outside the conventional wisdom.
Then there’s you, Joe Williams, for whom anything that runs on a major network or NPR is the Gospel truth to be brought here in a ’see! See, I told you so fashion.’ (And what’s with the Joe Williams signature move of putting an exclamation point after the name of whoever you’re addressing? Is that your Tourettes’ acting up?) There’s no spin so worn out and craven that Joe Williams won’t pick it up, dust it off, and use it for his own little right-wing push back.
Seriously, Joe, you shovel an awful lot of discredited spin–particularly the right wing talking points on race–that is just factually inaccurate. When I Google it, particularly your screeds about how Democrats are the ‘real’ racists, Republicans passed civil rights, Robert Byrd, et al, it’s all just Michelle Malkin, Opinion Journal, National Review, and other media outlets inventing arguments to get themselves off the hook. That’s the stuff you’re pushing, like the good little minion you are. And then you have the gall to try to call ME out as someone who takes orders?
If I’m a sheep, Joe, I can’t imagine what that makes you.
Nope….we did not defend Bush on charges. Do not re-write what I was saying. I never once claimed there was no relationship. What I did, several times, was to ask for the proof you said existed of a relationship between the lobbyist himself and GW.
Anything..like memos, correspondence, evidence of phone calls, meetings, etc., not solely White House documents, but anything that could prove a relationship. Not inuendo, not “analysis”, not unsubstantiated claims, but actual, documentary proof. Something more than generalized statements about “contacts with the Administration”.
And, in response, there were insults, juvenile name calling and immature accusations of my inability to read.
Do you remember the asinine “tadpole brain and alligator mouth” crack? Things like that sure prove your claim.
Do you remember the asinine “tadpole brain and alligator mouth” crack? Things like that sure prove your claim.
Claim of what? That I have your number…lololololol
Joe Williams, you said:
“If Bush says he didn’t know who he is, I believe it. Yes! Abramoff was an influential and powerful lobbyist, but he is small potatoes in the lobbyist field”
Then in Ray’s next post, he says:
“Joe is right on and factual”
Yep. Neither of you guys defended anyone. Did you take my suggestion and search google with
bush + abramoff or
abramoff + small potatoes?
I am still waiting on your proof of those comments (bush didnt know him and abramoff is small potatoes) being “factual and right on”.
Come on you guys, why deny what you say? If you say it mean it, and if you dont mean it, dont say it.
PL”JM, 40 percent of Americans still trust Bush. This blog’s for them.”
PL, do you really think 40% of the American people who trust in Bush are going to read this blog? Or was that a dig:-)
Ok, I will type REALLY SLOWLY this time, maybe it will soak in.
My ONLY statement about the FACT is that a photo op proves nothing. That was it. That is all. Nothing more. PERIOD.
You agreed with that statement.
Your insults are childish.
I’m sorry Ray. I know you just hate being confronted with your own words.
But PL, can 40 percent of the American people READ???
I see that the WE editors are still hard at work writing about nothing.
You know it is a slow news period when reporters like you Melissa have nothing better to do than write about Abramoff again.
I don’t know what is worse:
The National Enquirer or the Wichita Eagle editors.
At least I get a laugh from The Enquirer.
With this administration, if it’s not one damn thing, it’s another. But it looks like some of the president’s own are starting to see the light.
“Republican lawmakers said Sunday that President Bush should publicly disclose White House contacts with Jack Abramoff, the lobbyist who has pleaded guilty to felony charges in an influence-peddling case.”
http://www.cnn.com/2006/POLITICS/01/29/bush.abramoff.ap/index.htmlOh, this is getting good!
So Joe W. calls himself an “alpha wolf.”
Joe, why don’t you go find Little Red Riding Hood and you can continue your fairy tale until you completely lose touch with reality?
Alpha wolf, oh brother, that’s rich.
I was a Wolf once but then I became a Bear and finally moved from cub scout to full fledged boy scout.
Nathan–
Thanks for your personal jibes at the Wichita Eagle editors.
For years now, I’ve been trying to get them to understand that the moderate and left-leaning readers should be their target audience, and leave the idiots to Fox and Rush.
You are proving my point far better than my poor power could . . .
