Abramoff isn’t going down alone

By pleading guilty today, lobbyist Jack Abramoff (shown in hat leaving federal court) avoids being in the center ring of a trial on federal charges of conspiracy, tax evasion and mail fraud. Now the questions become which public officials were part of Abramoff’s acknowledged conspiracy, beyond Rep. Bob Ney, R-Ohio, and whether the American public will care enough to demand change.

That, indeed, is the issue.Until people other than Christian Rightists develop attention spans longer than companion animals, we’re doomed.

Considering that the American public goes on shopping at the mall while the despot in the White House shreds the Constitution, I’m not terribly optomistic that this political financing machine will be seen for what it is.

I think it’s so common place, the average American no longer pays any attention. It’s just taken for granted that most public officals are corrupt and greedy.

    Damoon,

Agreed. And this spin/conventional widsom totally misunderstands the intentional effort by the GOP’s leadership (Norquist, Reed, Rove, Abramhoff, Delay) to forge an ironclad alliance between lobbyist money and the policies pushed by GOP congressmen and senators. The GOP has been for sale to the highest bidder for some time, and as the majority party, is in a position to reward its benefactors in unimaginable ways.

Corruption in Washington is old hat. The GOP lobbying, influence peddling, and financing machine, by contrast, is extraordinary. There has never been anything remotely like it. This scandal is a specifically Republican phenomenon, hatched at the highest levels of party leadership, and nurtured for a couple of decades.

Is it teflon coating on bush? Is it he survives one scandle by creating ten new ones?

    What is VRLB?

Other than that. It’s going to be interesting to see how many members of Congress gets pulled down from this. People predict about 15 or so. Most Republicans, but there are some Democrats, including Harry Reed!

I said it’s taken for granted that MOST public officals are corrupt and greedy. I’m too optimistic to believe that they all are. Through their own actions and history, elected officals have earned the same reputation as used car salesmen, only I’d probably trust a car salesman more.

    OFF-TOPIC WARNING:Damoon,

The Gallop poll does a poll each year to determine the most trusted profession by the US populace. This year’s winner was . . . nurses. Did not know if you’d heard that.

Hardtruth and Ben, I like the acronyms, but if we should follow the Jewish Carpenter’s example, then we need to show more compassion for someone who is obviously very mentally ill. If that’s too hard, then it’s better to just ignore him.

I suppose you’re right, Damoon, but I try to presume some connection with reality until it’s obviously pointless to go there.

Someone who rants a slogan as pointless as “The White Race Lives” over and over isn’t likely to be too in touch with reality.

Mephysto also made a good point that XXX and Tracy have made earlier: Don’t feed the trolls (though I did appreciate the poetry, PL!).

Depending on the news reports one reads, ol’ Jack is saying that between 20 – 60 sitting members of Congress could be implicated in the scandal.

Considering that our own Todd Tiahrt is a loyal capo for Tom Delay, I can’t wait to see what kind of things are set to come out.

Been sleeping well recently, Congressman Tiahrt?

Speaking of “Tanker Todd”; when are we going to get all those pork-barrel jobs he promised? I saw in the news that the Air Force is re-opening the tanker project but that Airbus might get it. And, since we are so slavishly loyal to Tiahrt’s former employer, that construction will go to Alabama instead of Wichita.
