Tiptoeing to the White House?

Sen. Hillary Clinton, D-N.Y., has been traveling the country, raising funds and support for her upcoming election — or is it elections? The New York Times reports:
“With her New York election just 10 months away, neither she nor her advisers want to do anything that might suggest that she has ambitions beyond the state, where Republicans once pilloried her as a carpetbagger intent on using the state as a stepping stone for national office. . . . In fact, Mrs. Clinton and her advisers appear to have figured out a narrow strategy of how to run for president without actually running for president — though the Clinton camp insists that her sole concern at the moment is winning re-election in New York, and points out that she has been traveling the country helping Democrats for years.”

Senators gave an ‘I, I’ for Alito

An Opinion Line contributor recently wondered who in his right mind would want to put up with the hassle of getting elected but a crook. But my thinking is that you have to be a bit egotistical rather than crooked to want to go through the hassle of a national political campaign. And judging from how many times the senators questioning Justice Samuel Alito used the word “I,” I might be on to something. According to a computer analysis of the hearings from The Washington Post, Republicans used the “I” word 1,180 times. Democrats used it 1,123 times. Combined, they used it far more than the nominee, who said “I” 1,907 times.

Well, maybe a casino wouldn’t be so bad after all

Kansas Republican Party chairman Tim Shallenburger, who opposed expanded gambling when he was a lawmaker and when he ran for governor, is now urging lawmakers to allow it in southeast Kansas, the Lawrence Journal-World reported. The reason for the about-face is that there are now nine Indian casinos in Oklahoma just across the state line from his home in Baxter Springs. “Clearly along the border, right now, they’re sucking money out of our economy,” Shallenburger said. Sounds like what is happening now in Sedgwick County — and what would get much worse if lawmakers shut out Wichita from the expanded gaming legislation.

Mentoring program scores touchdown

Gov. Kathleen Sebelius scored big by getting former Kansas State University football coach Bill Snyder to head up a new program called Kansas Mentors. The statewide effort is aimed at strengthening Kansas children through the help of adult role models, and Snyder is a great person to help promote it.
