Who needs faith when you have proof?

Eugene Robinson, in this commentary for The Washington Post, argues that intelligent design is actually anti-faith, in that it seeks to prove there is a God.
He writes:
“There is no need to have faith in something that can be touched, measured, quantified, predicted; no need for faith in something that can be seen if only we build a big enough telescope or a sensitive enough electron microscope.
“What would be the posture of a believer toward a God who could be seen? It might be adoration, I suppose, or obeisance, but it wouldn’t be faith as believers since St. Paul have understood it. Faith requires mystery. Faith requires a leap.”

That is why it is called the “Miracle of faith” , it takes a miracle to believe without proof. If you could see God, then there would be no question about following God. Where would be the trick in following the teachings? It would be just as simple as obeying the speed limit, if you see the cop you automatically go the speed limit. If you can see no cops and only believed in the existence of a cop, it takes a real commitment to follow the speed laws.

I feel that is the real danger in the whole movement to put I.D.(creationism) in the class room, you would then have to prove God existed . If that could already be proven this debate would not be happening, nor would there be a need for faith.

We will see. I for one think that I.D. is not considered a Science, but I was listening to NPR the other day and they had a commentator who was talking about the “Big Bang” theory.

Back in the 1920’s, when it was introduce, it was treated much like ID is treated now. Only a few scienist believed it, and it was scorned by many and they said the “Big Bang” was a christian belief.

The reason that many scienist in that period didn’t believe or thought that the Big Bang theory was just a farse, is because it was commonly known that the Universe was Contant and not expanding.

But later, scientist and astrologers found out that the universe is expanding and now the big bang is a widely held scientific theory.

Also! We didn’t even know how continents moved until 1969 when they discovered Plate Techtonic Theory.

I know that Evolution does take place. There is too much evidience and wide support in the scientific arena for it.

But I might not discount ID just yet. Biology is pretty complex to be random, but I’m still not too convience it is a science rather than a belief, because I have no idea how you can find out there is a creator of some kind.

I mean! If we ever found out, Religion in this world is going to be destoryed. Well! I guess it goes for the same if aliens are ever discovered too.

“astrologers”? I think you mean astronomers.

Intelligent Design should be considered by researchers as any nascent theory might be considered. An interesting possibility but not really rising to the level of theory just yet. If it can be demonstrated and studied as evolution was (and remember that it also had its nascent beginnings) then it just might colplement or supplant evolution. However, before that can be considered the idea of ID will require a whole lot more examination.

I rememebr plate tectonics coming to the fore; it was quite a revolution. Before that is was widely believed that the seafloor was the oldest place to study; we now know that it is all very young. I have a couple of old texts in which plate tectonics is referred to as a new and unproven speculation.

Not only is the universe expanding, it’s accelerating in it’s expansion. I always thought time and life was enternal, but one day all the stars will burn out due to the expansion and life will be extinguished.

If a person needs proof, then they have no faith. And if that person has no faith, then they really do not believe in anything. And for that person, you have my deepest sympathy, for you are truly lost and probably do not even know it.
