Outlander,

Hopefully, you're right that I'm in Chicken Little territory. But from where I sit, this is the mother of all Constitutional crises. As for the chicken motif, no need to apologize: it practically proclaimed itself.

Best to you and yours in the New Year as well.

And here's a nice link that says, very eloquently, what I've been saying here for a while now.

http://www.chris-floyd.com/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=369&Itemid=1

CF: Your comparisons of what is going on to the Nazis is, again, silly. It goes way past the canary in a coal mine all the way to Chicken Little. But I understand that in order for there to be a center, there has to be a right wing and a chicken er.. uh, left wing.

Couldn't resist, CF. Have a Happy New Year!

Today, what is the difference between the 2005 Republican party and the 1935 German Nazi party - anyway?

Outlander,

Ever heard the phrase 'good Germans'? Those were the folks who chose to ignore the signs--obvious in retrospect--that their government was moving toward authoritarianism, and eventually toward full-fledged, genocidal totalitarianism. There's your 50% of the population, if that is an accurate number. Given that Bush's latest approval numbers are 41%, I'd say I'm closer to the mainstream than you are.

Furthermore, my position on the Left side of the political spectrum actually is an asset rather than a liability, since I'm in the group that is more likely to be the object of political surveillance and persecution. Folks like me serve as the canary in the ideological coal mine.

From where I sit, you're the one whose Right-Wing ideological commitment to this President has blinded your ability to grasp the motives behind his initiatives and obvious power grab.

CF: I think that such labeling is plain silliness and a complete mischaractarization of my posts, if in fact you have read any. If I am a neofascist, then 50% of the population around here would probably qualify as well.

I would contend that you stand so far left that it is hard for you to have any clear perspective.

Outlander,

Neofascists are like racists: nobody who is one thinks they are one.

Judging from the contents of your posts, your strident advocacy of expanding Executive power, and your attacks upon those who dissent from Bush's claims of extra-Constitutional privilege, I'm quite comfortable with calling you out as a neofascist.

CF: Well then, we agree. The NYT has no credibility.

And no offense, but I honestly don't think that you would recognize a neo-fascist if one bit you in the ass.

Outlander,

Dream on. The NYT has done NOTHING that should make any Liberal want to defend them. They've whored themselves out to your fascist Jesus freak from Texas as egregiously as has any other media entity.

As a result, the NYT has done to itself what Brownshirts like you have been unable to do for decades: discredited itself.

CF: If what the NY Times has been doing can be described as helping the administration, I wish they'd stop trying to help.

But you know the real score. The best defense is a good offense, right?

Making your foreign partners mad isn't a smart strategy in war on terror?Take in one step further, as the "war on terror" isn't a smart "strategy" thing, period. Making peace with the Arabs is the smart thing to do. The Israelis won't like that because then they will have to start abiding by international law, property rights, human rights, and getting along with their neighbors. And the "free-lunch" is over with the US Treasury.

There is no end to this "terrorism.. War on terror.. thing" because it can't end. There's no place to stop, unless we're all dead. And it's too good for shredding the G-d piece of paper formally known as the US constitution { Bush doesn't need to abide by the constitution if there is no constitution }.

Great post, CF.

Outandoutliar wrote: "I seem to recall that we have been told from the beginning that al-qaeda and their supporters were being hunted down wherevever they were. That didn't seem to be controversial."

Uhh . . . it's not controversial. If Osama M. H. Nasr is suspected of some crime, then by all means, get a warrant and arrest him.

What you, and codie, and Joe Blow, et al. do is to ASSUME that because he was arrested by our gov't, he was GUILTY.

Our gov't has to have evidence of a crime. If they don't, they can't arrest people, even if that person has the same name as the leader of Al Qaeda.

But I'll give you credit: you've been listening to your conservative leaders. It's like little Scottie McClellen getting grilled on prisoners held at Gitmo.

Reporter: Why do you hold prisoners without evidence at Gitmo?

Scottie: Because they're terrorists.

Reporter: How do you know they're terrorists?

Scottie: Because they've been imprisoned at Gitmo.

Ah, good, well, that clears that up.

I think it's funny when neo-fascist shills like codie and Outlander castigate the NYT for failing to be neofascist enough. It's laughable. Here the NYT goes to bend over backward to help the Administration by suppressing stories that would have hurt Bush's chances in the election (Judy Miller, wiretapping, etc.), and all ingrates like Outlander and codie can do is snivel the same old drivel about the NYT's lack of credibility because of its purported 'liberal bias.' Fellers, seems to me the NYT has lost its credibility by sucking up to the Right rather than by pushing some agenda of the Left.

The man had been under surveillance by the Italian intel to see if he will lead them to bigger fish. I guess CIA was working on commission to grab as many as they can regardless of the quality of the catch. I can see why the Italians were fuming, plus this is after the shooting of Calipari.

What sticks out in Mr. Brownlee's lead in is what is missing. For instance, what were the al-qaeda/terrorist ties involved? I seem to recall that we have been told from the beginning that al-qaeda and their supporters were being hunted down wherevever they were. That didn't seem to be controversial.

As far as alienating our allies, an Italian judge is along ways from speaking for the Italian government. And of course Nasr said that he was tortured. That claim is standard procedure. Evidence?

And finally, the source quoted is the NY Times. Sad to say, but they have sold their journalistic integrity and have become partisan.

Do we believe Brownlee and the NYT?They could be right for a change, but to stretch like Ahmad that Bush caused it or even knew is absurd.

The motto of the Bush administration--"we have to break the law to enforce the law."

9-11 changed "everything." It gave Bush the power to do whatever he wants, whenever he wants with no oversight from anything or any governing body.

It's part of the Orwell "ignorance is strength" campaign.
