Teach ID in religion, not science, class

Pope Benedict XVI said earlier this month that the universe was made by an “intelligent project.” So does that mean intelligent design or its arguments should be taught in science class? No, says the director of the Vatican Observatory. “Intelligent design isn’t science even though it pretends to be,” the Rev. George Coyne (in photo) said last week. “If you want to teach it in schools, intelligent design should be taught when religion or cultural history is taught, not science.” Exactly.

This is an amazing acknowledgment. Too bad Joe Wright and Terry Fox won’t feel constrained in their political dialoque, or Steve Abrams won’t “see the light”.

I don’t think the folks who are pushing ID put a lot of weight in what the Pope says.

Hasn’t this been beaten enough? Anybody got a fresh topic?

What would you like to discuss, JM? Suppose we can have a discussion without the usual virtrol fron the fringe of either party?

Falcone,The mating rituals of gay killer whales and how it affects the worlds tides strikes me a a subject worth discussing.

Granted, there have been many, many posts about this topic, be we cannot let it die before the election. Remember the old adage that politicans live by, “voters have short memories”.

We cannot let the BoE religious zealots get away with this outrageous violation of the public trust..both in their vote and their hiring of a lackey whose main qualification seems to be that he is on ‘their side’.

Sorry, JM, but we can’t risk letting it be forgotten…

Just what is the definition of “Intelligent Design”? Does anyone have an irrefutable, unarguable, intellectual definition?

Without a universally agreed upon definition, I don’t see how anyone can claim to know where or at which level it should be taught, discussed … or even what its about.

Personally, I think Intelligent Design relates to something that happened more than 12.6 billion years ago when many scientists say the “big bang” took place, most likely in a previous universe.

I think Creation and Evolution are separate philosophies and theories, apart from but perhaps related to Intelligent Design in some way not understood by man.

I suggest a college level course which explores various philosophies of Intelligent Design possibly from a professor of astro-physics, philosopy and religious theory. This would definitely not replace the important study of evolution in high school biology classes.

Anybody out there know such a person who could teach this course with a broad brush?

Most of the Christian faith, including Catholics, do not advocate the teaching of ID in public schools. Only the Evangelicals believe that, and push that.

“Scientia”. What does it mean? Knowledge. Suppose there is an intelligently designing creator. Where did HE come from?In our current form, we are not allowed to know the answer. There is a lot about modern science that does not require a belief in stochastic processes, or ID. Math, physics, chemistry, molecular biology. Do Kansas schools want to revisit 1920’s Tennessee, or teach productive 21st century science? Forget the evolution vs. ID controversy and go to http://www.collegeboard.com/student/testing/ap/exgrd_sum/2005.html, to wake up to the fact that Kansas students are being treated as though they are ignorant peasants. The evolution vs. ID controversy is a smokescreen. You can suspend evolution, and ID, and get your children educated. Or you can reenact Tennessee in your grandparents’ era. You decide what you want to do.
