Nation right to still like Ike

Kansans are justifiably proud of native son Dwight D. Eisenhower, the Abilene youth who grew up to command Allied forces in World War II and become a popular two-term Republican president.
So it’s good to hear about plans for a new Washington, D.C., memorial to Eisenhower near the National Mall that would focus on Ike’s presidential accomplishments, including the interstate highway system and civil rights enforcement.
Historians continue to debate whether Ike was a good or great president. But there’s no doubt, looking at the sum of his career as soldier and president, that he was one of the most significant American public servants of the past century.

Ike:1. He created to the Department of Education. He and his brother Milton wanted Kansas to be the top state in the country for education. Yet the state school board dishonors Ike and Milton with their policies designed to prohibit children from learning basic science.

    2. He protected the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge for all time. Yet both of our Kansas senators voted against him when they voted to allow it to be drilled for oil. It should be noted that our senators voted to give a $2,000 tax credit for buying the Hummer, which gets 8 MPG.

Yes, nationaly Ike is being honored but here in Kansas we’re doing nothing but dishonoring his name.
