South Asians need our prayers, dollars

The images from the South Asian earthquake tear at the heart. So many dead, including schoolchildren. So much destruction and need and sorrow, visited on people who had so little to begin with. With Americans just beginning to rebound from hurricanes Katrina and Rita and the U.S. military stretched by wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, there’s a chance that Pakistan and the other affected countries might not get the attention or help they must have to dig their way out of this disaster. Those in nations such as the United States must give as they can to relief agencies, and call on their governments to help this devastated region recover.

Y’ know, maybe we should be thinking about a new branch of the service dedicated to rescue missions; people trained in finding survivors and dismantling earthquake and flood and tornado-wrecked buildings, meeting medical needs, setting up logistics and repairing infrastructure etc. They’d have a pool of specialists to cope with all sorts of disasters, and be approved to operate anywhere needed, including within the U.S. and ready to move at a moment’s notice. There’re enough disasters worldwide to keep them busy, and be a welcome presence of Americans in places we get hated a lot.

The USA was branded as stingy by the UN poobah in charge of UN relief efforts after the tsunami struck mostly-muslim south Asia. He wanted more of our money to spend. America gave over a billion dollars. Muslim countries, many of them with trillions of our petrol dollars, hardly gave anything.

Now some Pakistani politicians are calling the West stingy about our relief efforts following their earthquake, even as their government-supported radicals continue to aid the remnants of the Taliban and al Qaeda.

India has been dropping burial shrouds on Pakistani villages that have more dead than living. What a wonderful gesture of understanding and compassion!

Seems like we should pay India to drop about a million more.

I don’t know about the rest of you, but I am about dollared out. Senior citizens can’t affore medications and non-group health insurance is over a thousand dollars a month per family. Yet we are asked to pony up in the name of the United States. How about getting our own house in order first.

Can the U.S. ever recover from the deficit spending we’re seeing now?

Some reasons why Saudi Arabia should be forced to become the world’s self-supported relief agency:

    1. They have most of our money.

    2. They have lots of people who need work.

    3. They need to take a first plunge into the notion of compassion.

    4. Al Jazeera will delight in having privileged access to worldwide images of destruction and suffering.

    5. Their women can run the country while their men are out saving the planet from the planet.

    6. We’re suffering from compassion fatigue.

    7. It will be fun to hear the UN’s limousine bureaucrats calling the Saudis stingy.
