Sen. Sam Brownback, R-Iowa?

Having recently declared that “All politics passes through Iowa,” Sen. Sam Brownback, R-Kan., is scheduled to make his fourth visit of the year to that state, this time to headline Saturday’s meeting of Iowans for Tax Relief in Des Moines. He’s one of five potential presidential candidates expected to glad-hand Iowans in October, never mind that the Iowa caucuses are 27 months away. The only other Republican to be seen as often in Iowa this year is Gov. Mike Huckabee of Arkansas. We’re sure Brownback was just trying to be a gracious guest and all, but for what it’s worth: Kansas politics do not pass through Iowa.

He’s running hard to the right for the 2008 presidential election. By showing potential opposition to Miers, he is getting the PR he needs to be a contender.

Personally, as a Democrat, I would love to see him make a serious run at the GOP nomination. I think we would beat him as long as we ran anyone to the right of Che Guevara.

Yup, good site, Nate. Keep it up.

It’s hard to imagine a worse candidate that the Republicans could run in 2008.

But the movers and the shakers in the party know that to actually WIN the abortion debate would be the death knell of conservative politics.

Nothing fires up the fundies and drives a wedge into the traditionally liberal Catholics like abortion.

You can rail against women’s sexuality under the guise of protecting “babies.” It’s perfect.

The last thing they want to do is resolve that issue.

The fact that there is still a debate at all shows that winning a court case doesn’t win the abortion debate. Democrats still find abortion to be a useful fundraiser. Abortion should be a state issue, not national.

    No, we don’t.

The abortion issue has killed the Democratic party. No way can we fire up our base on this the way the right-to-lifers can.

Even Hillary Clinton is talking about how much she “respects” the pro-life position.

Abortion is to conservative Christians as civil rights is to rednecks. They’ve both cost the Dems dearly, but, hey, we’ve got to do what’s right.

He will run in 2008 for sure. It is his only chance to run for President, lose in the Primaries or even the general election and still keep his Senate seat.

Kansas is such a bright red state that Tihart, Brownback and Pat Roberts all know this state will vote them in again and again. Just because they are republicans.

I’m appalled to find that Roberts was one of the 9 representatives that believe torture by the american government should be condoned.
