Lotteries are for people who failed math in school, the old joke goes. Well, unfortunately, that state of Kansas won’t be able to take advantage of dumb Oklahomans much longer. The Oklahoma lottery starts selling tickets next week. And that could add up to a significant loss in revenue — an estimated $10 million to $15 million a year — from Oklahomans who now drive to Kansas to play our lottery.

Hey, those dumb Okies are progressive. First casinos and now a lottery, need to relocate some Oklahoma legistlators to Topeka.
Buying a ticket only slightly improves your chances of winning.
The money goes to some kind of a business enterprise institute (or it used to anyway), so I’m not sure how much difference the loss of revenue is really going to make anyway.
The income from the lottery to State of Kansas does not go to education as most Kansans think. Instead it goes to “economic development,” read travel slush fund by state officials.
Kansas economic development funds are tightly kept under the protective wing of the Kansas lieutenant governor. Perhaps five years ago, a then current lieutenant governor, who had been a glorified bank teller in his previous life, arrived here in Wichita in the back seat of a chauffeur driven black limosine, emerging in a florish to no one else standing around. Under his tutelage, trips for his associates are taken around the world obstensibly to wave our royal blue state flag to the crowds to bring attention to Kansas.
As far as I know, this lottery/economic development fund has never produced one successful new business from elsewhere for Kansas.
Yes… I would love to know where this “econominc development” money goes to.I figure it should pay for the arena that nobody wants.
I remember when they were trying to pass the lottery here, they said it would fund schools. Well, some bright person decided that since a guaranteed amount could not be agreed to be sent to the schools, then none could. So, where does the money go? Sure didn’t pay for the arena. I-35 & I-70 are still toll’s.
Dumb Okies? The state of Oklahoma and its people are a lot of things, but dumb isn’t one of them. I am sure Will Rogers never met anyone like you.
I came to this city because of a job I got that was created with lottery money. It does work, although the process ought to be a little more transparent so people would understand it better.
