Liberals in the blogosphere have been giddy at the prospect that special prosecutor Patrick Fitzgerald will bring indictments against White House higher-ups in the CIA leak case, perhaps today. But all the celebratory talk of this as “Fitzmas Day” is as inappropriate as Tom DeLay’s grinning mug in his mug shot last week. A little respect for the gravity of the situation, please.

The people who are giddy are the very same ones who have been for several years now told they are unpatriotic for not believing all the spin the white house produced on the war intelligence.
Maybe it’s not the best taste, but after several years the entire public is seeing that yes, the intelligence was skewed to force the war on Iraq.
This investigation also brings to light how unpatriotic this administration is in exposing an intelligence agent whose only crime towards them was to speak the truth.
What is really inappropriate is that the administration really believed they were in the right to expose Valerie Plame.
The behavior of George W. Bush is far more inappropriate in so many ways than the enthusiasm surrounding the prospect that justice might find its way back into American culture. We have endured enough untruthfulness and deception from a White House which insults us daily. Any truth now would be uplifting and that is just cause for celebration.
Sorry libs, Rove walks, as those of us who follow politics with some semblance of intellectual balance have been saying for months. Better luck next time!!!
No Rove doesn’t walk, he slithers.
Yeah! Looks like Libby might be Martha Stewarted! But there still needs to be a trail. An indictment doesn’t mean he is guilty.
There in no reasonable doubt nor is there unanimous decisons of the grand jury is needed to indict somebody.
I’m not trying to defend the guy, I could care less. I just want to explain the process.
Huh. I guess ‘remains in legal jeopardy’ is Republicanese for ‘walking.’
For the record, Joe Williams is quite correct: the legal threshold for indictment by a grand jury is much lower than the standard of proof for guilt or innocence in a jury trial.
I find the idea of Libby on the stand, under oath, in a jury trial, quite satisfying, thank you. From what I’ve read, he was the conduit between the Neocons driving the Iraq War and the inner sanctum of the White House. He knows EVERYTHING.
And the point has been made elsewhere (notably by Steve Gilliard) that while it may seem more satisfying to get Rove outta there (I certainly share in the Schadenfreude [def: 'malicious glee over the misfortune of another'] over Rove), Libby is far more central to sorting out the major policy disaster of the last five years–the Iraq War. And if folks really want to see the country set back on course, and walked back from the precedent of a rush to war, Libby’s indictment is central to regaining what we’ve lost–namely, the rule of law.
Nice spin, CF. Not buying it here. You’re disappointed and I couldn’t be happier!
Joe Blow,
Do you know how to read? I said I was disappointed. Duh.
But since I, unlike you, actually think that Watergate was a crime that needed to be punished, I also know enough that ‘follow the money’ is the guiding rule in any investigation. And the big fish here, for me, has always been the Administration’s campaign of lies and propaganda about WMD to bring about the Iraq invasion. Libby is at the center of that story in a way that Rove is not. Furthermore, the prosecutor told Rove he’s still in ‘legal jeopardy.’ I’d hold off on uncorking the champagne if I were you.
More to the point, Joe Blow, everything isn’t about my side winning regardless of how the American people will get screwed. If that’s all it takes for you to be able to say that you ‘couldn’t be happier,’ that’s pretty sad.
Huh. Digby makes the interesting, obvious point. Who here thinks Rove cut a deal with Fitzgerald and rolled over on Libby?
CF: It’s ALL a great big conspiracy!!!! OOOOOOOO! In fact, it’s a conspiracy so vast and diabolical the fact that there are no facts to support such a conspiracy don’t demonstrate that a conspiracy doesn’t exist! No! No facts simply demonstrate how truly vast and diabolical the conspiracy really is!!!Lova ya Libs. Love ya.
Joe,
Well. Scooter Libby indicted on five counts of lying and obstruction of justice.
Are there ‘no facts’? We’ll see. But the fact that there ARE five indictments against Libby suggest the Grand Jury thinks there is something there. And the indictments may not be over yet.
Moreover, Joe, in the wake of the long, expensive, and fruitless Whitewater fishing expedition, you may want to reconsider flinging around the ‘no facts’ defense.
Best yet: Libby learned Valeria Plame’s identity not from Tim Russert, like he said, but from who? Who?
From Dick Cheney?
I wonder if somebody’s pacemaker is starting to bother him?
Rove has to be protected at all costs. Bush does not have the ability to stand alone and be President. Let’s face it, the “boy” cannot construct a sentence, or think through any potential problem, just look at his Miers decision. He couldn’t see that one coming?
Anyone on this blogosphere could have seen { with the exception of “Joe” } that one coming.
They’ve circled the wagons and Rove is being protected.
I wonder if Rhonda really believes that “Merry Fitzmas” is unbecoming or she just wanted to get a flame war going.
Anyway, she’s right, we libs are ecstatic. For going on six years, we’ve seen the Bush administration run this country into the ground. And nobody could really stand up to him because they were labelled “terrorist sympathizers” (like the right-wing pukes continue to do on this very website).
Now they finally got nailed for something. It’s not as much as they deserve, not by a factor of a thousand, but it’s a start.
Hallalujah, and MERRY FITZMAS!
“Everything you (conservatives) said about the war in Iraq turned out to be wrong. And everything I and the anti-war movement said about the war turned out to be right. Over 1 billion dollars a week is spent on a war based on a pack of lies. 100,000 Iraqi civilians dead, on a pack of lies. 2000 American soldiers died for a PACK OF LIES.”
George Galloway, MP, in testimony before a Senate hearing
Galahad
We Conservatives are ecstatic as well. We’re not enemies, we both love America.
Galahad
Don’t confuse us conservatives with neoconservatives.
We’re on the outside as well.
Ed, if you think that Congress and the White House are Israeli occupied terrority, you must be one lonely conservative, heh.
Joe, why in the world would put a reference to yourself and intellectual in the same sentence? YOU”RE AN IDIOT. The proof is in the comments you post on this site. The specific category you fall into is reserved for the elite few who can’t count their balls and come up with the same number twice.
K….the correct usage is “you’re an idiot,” not “you”re an idiot. Idiot.
When all else fails, argue about typos. It’s obvious K can spell.Which is more than we can say for some. Way to go Joe.
After listening to Fitzgerald today, I could not help but wonder if the election results in ‘04 would have been different if Judith Miller had not sought to protect her sources. Sources she never used to write a single story. Kind of interesting . . .
Judith is out of the picture, which is as it should be.She went to jail for attention and could care less about the sanctimony of her “sources”.
The indictment of Libby might not be a big deal at first glance, but remember, Watergate started as an investigation of a simple burglary.Democrat of Republican, this marks a sad day for our country.
NiteRider,
Agreed–but the indictment is the biggest of big deals. This is the first time since the Grant Administration–130 years–that the member of a Presidential Administration has been indicted.
So, W was going to restore ‘honor’ to the WH? Another lie, just like the lies about WMD.
Impeach Joe Blow! LoL I know he will show up here soon.
Tracy,
Regardless of Miller’s motive she will forever have earned my distaste for what I think were the likely consequences of her actions. Fitzgerald thought that he would be wrapping up his investigation in August of ‘04. It’s probably silly to think about it now, but I can’t help but wonder if the Repbulican convention might have looked a bit different with high officials being indicted for crimes. Or, would today’s bomb do less damage and make less noise in the absence of the Katrina response, etc.
And to our blogger friends who think Rove is going to walk, I would say that the red dot from the sniper’s rifle scope is clearly shinning on his heart. He surely can’t be sleeping well.
Bush in his statement, didn’t blast the Special Prosecutor. Didn’t call Scooter Libby the greatest VP Chief of Staff of all Time. Nope, he’s no Bubba.
Aw, come on, Rhonda, lighten up. The liberals have had to put up with talk of Clinton’s misdeeds for too long not to have the satisfaction of having a little fun with this. If you haven’t taken a look around and seen all the creativity going on with ‘Fitzmas,’ you have no sense of humor.
CF, without question this is a “big deal”. The ongoing criminality in our government is an even bigger deal, and it spans administrations. it brings to mind the old saw about how absolute power corrupts absolutely. There’s just too much money in politics and our politicians are to be had by the highest bidder. Doesn’t matter which political stripe, they all seem to be on the take for special intrests.I think they’re all crooks.
Joe Blow is a Zionist.
Damn, you got me blowhard. I new that shift key would be the end of me. You are intellectually insignificant but you do deserve a pat on the back for knowing that a (’) goes in a contraction and not a (”). I guess all of the hoopla about inbreeding causing genetic damage is blown way out of proportion. Congrats!
Joe Blow is just one of many “joe’s ” we see posting here.Hey Joe? outed ya a long time ago bud. Each and every one of your posts is derived almost verbatem from Rush or Hannity.
Giddy? Hell yes I’m giddy! Any good American should be giddy today. It is not a bad thing to take pleasure in the finding of corruption in government, particularly when that corruption has been sensed by an awful lot of people for many years.
I note here that aside from Rhonda, the many faced “joe” is the only bushie in presence. That may be telling.
Don’t forget what is at the heart of this; the rush to war. The Libby indightments today are just the beginning of questions that a nation that was told war was needed and now asks why will increasingly demand answers to. With 2000 Americans dead in Iraq and more than 400 billion dollars spent……..thus far with almost no verifiable success, those questions will increase. There will be more special prosecutors and grand juries while more Americans die in Iraq and more money is spent. And increasingly more numbers of Americans will feel “giddy” (Rhonda’s word) that the source of it all is being called to account.
Prediction: If Bush survives second term, he will pardon Libby and all those yet to be exposed.
Galahad
Israeli occupied territory? They brag about what you fail to notice.
http://www.aipac.org/AIPAC-pc2006.html
No, Ed, I think it IS Israeli occupied territory. My point was I don’t know many conservatives who think that, heh.
The answer than, is to impeach Bush before he can pardon ALL his cronies
