Gorby chess visit shows big thinking

How amazing is it that former Soviet President Mikhail Gorbachev, the face of the evil empire during the Reagan years, will be the honored guest and speaker at a Chess for Peace Festival in Lindsborg today?
Then again, who would have believed that chess grand master Anatoly Karpov would establish an international chess school in the small Kansas town? Gorbachev heard about Lindsborg through Karpov.
Lindsborg’s dream has become a wonderfully surreal and positive reality for Kansas. And it shows what can happen when Kansans dare to think big.

    Randy:

Soviet President Mikhail Gorbachev was not the face of the “evil empire,” and President Reagan knew it.

Gorbachev had a hard right wing of communists to deal with and both men understood how to break that grip.

President Reagan helped Gorbachev by introducing ” star wars ” as the communist leaning liberals on the far-left of the democratic party liked to call it { after McCarthy had flushed the communists out in the open, they took refuge in the far-left of the democratic party }.

Knowing that “star-wars” would break the back of communism, communists in the democratic party fought tooth and nail to ridicule what was actually a bluff by President Reagan

As expected, the Soviet Union could not afford to counter a spaced-based missile defense system, that and fact that communism could barley feed or house the Russian People caused the hard-liners to lose control and finally for the Soviet Union to collapse.

It doesn’t surprise me that Mikhail Gorbachev is being honored.

There is an old story about Lindsborg told many times over. A large group of Swedish immigrants entered New York harbor many years ago on their journey to settle in Lindsborg, Kansas. Enthralled, they gazed on the Statue of Liberty and the tall buildings of New York. With wonder, they exclaimed, “If Neew Yoork City is this vunderful, what must Lindsborg be like?!!!

As an occasional visitor to Lindsborg over the years, I enjoyed eating at the Swedish Crown restaurant downtown and the old Wagon Wheel ?? Restaurant (pan fried chicken) located on old Highway 81. Are they still in business?

In any case, Mr. Gorbachev chose a great example of small town Kansas to visit, possibly drawn as much by the Swedish food and traditions as the Chess for Peace festival. So, Mr. G., we hope you enjoy your visit to beautiful Lindsborg, Kansas this fine fall weekend.

Ed,Nice post. some good history there. Tha fall of the Soviet Union was a thing of beauty to those who understood what was happening. Reagan proved one great point: Don’t play poker with him.Sadly, the Wagon Wheel is closed, or was the last time I was through. Fantastic meeting place. Great people. A dear friend of mine’s great(great?)grandfather helped lay the bricks on the roads of the town.Coronado heights is a great place to hit golf balls off of:-))

Thank You. It’s good to find a fellow traveler able to appreciate the demise of the evil empire by two truly great men in President Ronald Reagan and Soviet President Mikhail Gorbachev.

It’s always seemed strange how this great men used power for the good of all mankind, while Communism, Fascism and now Zionism all represent the worse possible aspects of human endeavor, and still are able to draw a following.

Reagan and Gorbachev had power, and as Randy’s photo clearly shows, both men are smiling, amid the grace of mankind’s betterment.

Yet even stranger than communism or fascism is Zionism. After 60 years of the most abhorrent sadistic treatment of the Palestinians, the world seems reluctant to see the obvious. All the lies about their history, the deception, all seemingly driven by some insane hatred of people, even among themselves.

Perhaps it is just the personification of insanity and whatever attraction that offers to the deranged mind.
