It didn’t seem as if Darfur could get any worse, but it may have. The Janjaweed militias that have burned villiages in western Sudan and killed and raped thousands are turning their guns on the Sudanese government that armed them, The New York Times reported. One observer said: “Darfur is no longer under control. . . . There’s this armed group and that armed group. It’s getting more complicated by the day.”

I wonder why the worst conflicts and genecidial areas of our modern time (after WWII) are done in Islamic fundamentalist.
Maybe the war on terror is a good thing for us to fight. We need to stop all the suffering that the fundamentalist are causing in this world.
The most disgusting thing about this sad case is the lack of support from those “great” Americans, Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton. Guess there’s no money to be made from people who barely have their lives.
Funny, I don’t recall Jesse or Al as having any political office in which they could really do anything to help this situation.
Not like say, oh I don’t know, FLIPPING GEORGE BUSH.
Yeah, that makes sense, it’s Al Sharpton’s fault blacks are systematically killed in Darfur. We couldn’t possibly hold our fearless leader responsible for anything, could we?
Nobody said that the deaths in Darkur were Al Sharpton’s fault, Gal. You’ve conjured your own conclusion again.
Galahad, since when it is ONLY the governments responsiblity to do anything about it.
Last I check, it was chairty orginizations that are trying to do something about it. Since Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton in the past have injected themselves in events, such as the American Spy plane crash in China and the bombing range in Vieques.
Why cannot they make a voice for the people of Darfur?
Why shouldn’t our president make his voice heard? Aren’t we in the business of punishing the bad guys? Isn’t that the latest greatest reason why we attacked Iraq? Hussein was a bad man and those poor Iraqis were suffering under his rule {not to be confused with the suffering they’re doing under our rule}. Shouldn’t we be in Darfur bombing, maiming, and killing those poor black people to protect them? What could possibly be the difference between Darfur and Iraq?
Is there any oil in Darfur?
Because it takes years of investigation and the UN must inspect and make the determination before we can do anything about it.
Iraq didn’t happen overnight. It took 10 years of weapons inspectors, oil for food programs, containment, no-fly zones, and numorous violations of UN resolutions before we went into Iraq again.
But Joe, we don’t need any UN help or approval to attack, witness our attack on Iraq. And since when does the UN carry any weight with those of conservative bent? (of course not that you would be one of those) It just seems to me that since we are the self-appointed concience for the planet, this would be a preimum opportunity to show our righteous indignation over the treatment of these poor souls. And considering the lack of military prowess in that part of the world, we might even have a chance of winning, even if one were to ignore our pencant for being able to screw up an anvil in a sand pile when it comes to military stratigy. I think we could forget about flowers and candy, though. I’m still curious if there’s any oil to be had.
Joe?
You still cling to Bush. But his credibility and yours are wearing pretty thin these days.
The arguement on the right avoids the original reason for our war in Iraq. That is addresssed in another blog and is about to get REAL PROMINENT again. But the current Right wing justification for the war in Iraq is “freeing people and ending genocide and tyranny”
Um…….Joe? Darfur? Tibet? I could list others. Why bother?
Now Joe? President Clinton involved us in Bosnia. Now those on your side call that to this DAY a “wag the dog” a distraction abroad to divert attention from problems at home. Maybe you all are right. But I tell ‘ya this. We ended genocide in Bosnia. There was no oil or other American corporate interst there. But we did it. And we didn’t lose any Americans doing it.
So what say you JOE? Should we act to aid in the Darfur matter? Or are you just a hypocrite?
Joe,It is illegal for private citizens to interfere in international affairs. That’s not to say it doesn’t happen, but if you do it, you’d better have Jesse Jackson’s or Al Sharpton’s visibility before you set out.Since it is the government’s job to take care of the international scene, the administration’s policy of looking the other way is unconscionable. Of course there isn’t much we could do militarily, while all our troops are committed to that quest for the Bush family jewels in Iraq, but there has to be more than we’re doing now!
Everyone agrees it is a terrible situation, but has anyone noticed that Americans are still getting killed in Iraq. If there is oil in Dafur, then the U.S. should get involved for the sake of national security. Otherwise let them sort it out among them selves.
Hello. Came upon your site by accident – doing a little research on Sharpton and Sudan. Let me just say, very politely to JM Wlaker, that perhaps you are uninformed. In 2001 (abefore 9/11) Sharpton went to Sudan and discovered that indeed slqvery was taking place there. He vowed in response to a woman, whose freedom was just purchased through a Christian group, who said to him that “nobody knows” what is happening to her people. This was southern Sudan, not Darfur. Sharpton replied, “They will now”. (This was all in 5 days of coverage by the N.”Y. Post). He came back and instead of a few perfuctory statements, did nothing. This man almost shut down NYC over one man, Amadou Diallo, but for close to 2 million (tha’s 2 million) dead blacks in Sudan, nothing. Not a demo, no arrests, no mass protests. Why? Is Sudan his fault, no> Did he do what he claims to be his mission in life, helping blacks who are getting the shaft, or worse? No. He is a hypocritcal liar. You may dislike Bush, but he actually tried to negotiate (and did) a treaty in south Sudan. It is somewhat holding, and somewhat not.Next to Sharpton, Bush is saintly (and I hardly think he is a saint). There is much more to say, but this is only a web site.Thank you,Paladin

I mean no disrespect by the the following observations. That said, I wonder why the large African-American population has not made this and other African tradgedies, their own.If Scotland had a major crisis, I would be there, first, in person, with money. It seems that there is a crisis in Black Africa every year. I think that the world is in doubt about the reality of these always overwhelming situations.I don’t doubt that there is a huge, humanitarian need in Sudan but these incidents just seem to go on. I have heard more than one person connect the Nigerian email scams with calls for donations regarding Darfur.
This whole thing is just another attempt by certain elements in American society and abroad to continue their anti-Muslim, anti-Arab and oil mongering campaign. Back to the playbook they go, when America sent CIA and arms under the cover of the Peace Corp in the same region. The U.S. government and their “Save Darfur” propagandists have the temerity to even bring race into the equation, but only by lying. The vast majority of the people are Black Arabic speaking Muslims and Black Muslims that speak tribal languages. The remaining small groups of animist and Christians in the very south of the country had been living without the attention of America or the majority of Sudanese until America saw its evil little opening, using drop offs of food and guns to its supported militia groups in the hunger ravaged Congo (where America and Western Europe has just finished creating genocide to keep its hands on that nations resources) to entice them across the border to augment the population. This is a man made crisis and America and its satellite buddy in the Middle East that need not be named, is using “crisis” as an excuse to send in their people or their little trained African mercenaries parading as “peace keepers”. The argument used is that the crisis is more important than sovereignty. If that is the case then let’s have some nations come and take over our ghettos and claim Louisiana as their new mandate. Next thing you know this blog will be worried about Zimbabweans hungry from sanctions because that evil dictator man took some of the white colonists’ plantations away to give to those awful negroes. Word to the wise- check who started this campaign and who is pushing it. We have killed and destroyed enough for these people, it is time to stop being Israel and Big Oil’s puppets.
