Corkins makes a nervy request

If Bob Corkins knew what he ought to know to be Kansas’ new education commissioner, should he need to spend $15,000 on a consultant to help him settle into the job? Surely not. Yet Corkins has asked his bosses on the State Board of Education to tap Washburn University professor Daniel Harden, who was a finalist for Corkins’ job, to advise him for the next six months. The conservative board members whose six votes prevailed in hiring Corkins likely won’t deny him this request, but it seems especially nervy coming from someone whose career has been spent urging elected officials to spend less.

Bob Corkins and the entire Kansas School Board are an embarrassment to many of us, especially those of us who spent money and time to get a teaching degree. People living in this state only care about their right-wing politics and their right-wing religion. Nothing else matters. As a social studies teacher, I am forced to considered moving to a state that actually values education. I feel sorry for the children brought up here. They will never know what a real education is.

Ok to get this straight, he wants to hire the better qualifed person that he beat out for the job.I had heard the truly smart man hires people that are smarter than he is. Wait, let me check…Yeah the sky is still blue in MY world! What color is it in theirs? I think I may buy stock in the company that makes an-acid, I have a feeling the sales will go up in Kansas.

The consultant is Daniel Harden, an education professor at Washburn University, conservative advocate and good friend of Education Board Chairman Steve Abrams, a conservative Republican from Arkansas City.

    IOKIYAR!Enough said?

I thought the idea was to cut the waste out of government. What the hell happened to smaller more efficient government? We have hissy-fits at the idea of spending money on education, but we’ll sure throw it away to provide OJT for this idiot Corkins.

I agree with S. Otto. I feel sorry for kids who have to depend on Kansas for an education.

I think the theory is that if they can make public schools bad enough, then everybody will have to send their kids to religious schools for a daily dose of propaganda.

Check out the earlier post on Corkins where Cindy Ducket is going off on everyone that takes offense to this guy’s new job.

Yeah, Duckie’s a real piece of work! I doubt she’s much of a piece of anything else.

At last this makes sense to me! The revelation that Harden is also a conservative makes it all make sense! Why hire one anti-education advocate when you can get 2 for 15,000 dollars more! And just what will Harden DO for that cool 15 k? Hold Corkins hand? There is absolutley no credible defense for this!

I think you have a point Jed. They have always wanted to kill public schools. They have always failed from without so they gotta get into public education and make such a mess that the public will GET BEHIND ending public education.

No person of good conscience can allow this to stand.

Oh and as to Duckie? She apparently took exception to some of my comments on the earlier blog. She sent me her email address. I don’t know it it is legit but I will be posting it here shortly.

When Corkins was named, some lawmakers began talking about passing a proposed constitutional amendment allowing voters to decide whether they want to abolish the elected board.

“If there is a backlash to this, it most likely will be questioning anew whether the Board of Education should be disbanded and replaced by a secretary of education named by the governor and confirmed by the Senate,” said Senate Majority Leader Derek Schmidt, R-Independence.

Senate Education Committee Chairwoman Jean Schodorf said it’s beyond “likely.”

“I promise you it will be back in the next session,” said Schodorf, R-Wichita.
