Congratulations to Wichita State University on its largest-ever gift, $8.5 million from the estate of W. Frank Barton to support the business school that already bears his name. The wonderful gift will endow three distinguished faculty chairs and enhance WSU’s drawing power for the long term.

Thank goodness BushCo. rolled back the estate tax. Otherwise, Barton’s estate would have to help pay down the national debt. Now we can just roll that responsibility to coming generations.
The Republicans, the “responsibility party” leaving no billionaire behind . . .
Galahad. I have some advice on how paying off the National Debt without raising taxes.
Spend less!
Well, you’re right. Cut expenditures and raise taxes. We need to do both.
In other words, get back to what Clinton did for eight years.
Unfortunately, Bush is raising expenditures (33 percent in 4 years) and cutting taxes.
The results speak for themselves.
Galahad? Do you want your taxes raised? Or just the rich people. You know, you can always volunteer to donate your money to the United States Treasury. They accept donations. Are you willing to put in? Put your money where your mouth is.

Joe W.,
I guess I don’t see why Galahad or any other individual should suffer a donation to the treasury to cover for everyone else who is not legally required to cough up cash. One can be in favor of a balanced budget, spending cuts, and modest tax increases without having to demonstrate one temerity by actually making a contribution.
By that logic, every Christian should donate to anyone who asks, regardless of need or plans for usage (see Mt 5:42; Lk 6:30). I think that Jesus’ implied message was “give to those who really need your help, but don’t be a patsy for every shyster Tom, Dick, and Harry.”
We all sink or we all swim together.
Yes, Joe W., I would like to see my taxes raised along with everyone else’s to pay for the Bush spending increases and the idiotic war he’s gotten us into.
It’s either pay now or pay later. I don’t think my grandchildren should have to pay for the policies of W. today.
As for voluntarily sending money to the gov’t, that’s exactly what people did when Clinton was paying down the debt–I remember it well because Rush Limbaugh ridiculed their efforts every damn day.
Clinton succeeded. Bush has failed.
Again and again and again and again.
Using Joe’s logic, Joe should run right down to the recruiter’s office since he supports Bush’s excellent war. Putting your money where your mouth is cuts both ways.
And speaking of putting money where one’s mouth is, Joe W. never did respond to my proposal to his proposal on another thread.
Here it is again–
You’re on. Oct 15, 2006. If people can drive from the airport to downtown Baghdad without an armed escort, if the country has a stable elected gov’t, if the US has pulled more than half of its 140,000 troops out, and we’re not losing 1-2 soldiers a day, then I will be happy to pay you 50 US dollars.
If however, any of the above is not true, you owe me. And I won’t enjoy collecting it.
I want the Iraqi invasion to be a quick success, just like every other American, liberal or conservative.
But I know from the simple facts of the situation that it can never be a success the way BushCo. promised.
Galahad! I’m still on with that bet. But since you change it from “nothing will change from in a year from now” to all what you say. I have the right to change the bet.
The $50 still stands on your conditions. But who ever recieves the money, either it you or me, we must donate it all to a charity of our choice. Political activist groups or candidates do not count. Bet?
Yes, Joe, I like that idea. A church or a national charity like the Salvation Army or Red Cross.
You’re on.
BTW, you got the long odds, my friend. BushCo. has been in Iraq for two and a half years, and the situation has gotten nothing but worse.
Good luck.
Is this what they mean when they talk about internet gambling?
Galahad! I know the future. I have a time machine. I’ll give you a heads up. See Bush and his cronies will be found guilty of numerous crimes. Bush will be impeached and the administration will be replaced by Howard Dean. He will then in turn dismantle all Repbulicans in Congress and leave left the Democrats. They will in turn make policy that will make the entire world safe and prosperous with 0% unemployment rate worldwide. Everybody will also have free health care and $150,000 year salaries. This will happen by March of 2006.
Since the world is a utopia based by the problem solving skills of leftist ideology, we will return the troops back from Iraq, dismantle the Military and use the money saved to our health care system. Peace will be enjoyed by everybody.
I will win the $50, but unfortunantly by giving it to a charitable orginaization it is subjected to the “give to donation tax” which has a rate of $99. But it’s ok. It’s your money anyhow. ;)
Wow, that was just weird!
Joe–
I just have one question (it’s a long question however).
Are you and the country better off because we have the FDA that keeps you from eating botulism in your food, social security that keeps millions out of abject poverty, the FAA that makes sure that when you fly on an airplane the wings won’t fall off, the SEC so you don’t get defrauded in Enron scandals (until Bush emasculated them at least), city councils that keep a strip club away from the Baptist church, the interstate highway act that built four lane limited access highways across the US, the police, fire, 911, restaurant inspectors, the EPA that keeps your drinking water from becoming sewer water, FDIC insurance so that you don’t lose money if your bank goes bankrupt?
As for me, I don’t really want to return to the 19th century.
No Galahad! All those are good things. I thing the government is necessary for our lives.
I can give you the same list of great achievements in our lives that were develop in the private sector as well.
Without companies, there would be no social security or employment, without the private sector developing medicences and food products people will die and starve, without inovation of business and commerce there would be no SEC and FAA.
All the government programs you listed exist after the fact, not before hand. Inovation is with individuals not government.
You don’t exist because of government, government did not create you, and government is not God.
Government plays an important role in our lives because it is needed for a just society. If men were angels, we wouldn’t need government right?
I agree with you. We are better off with everything you listed. But I also think we are better off with business, commerce, and inovation as well. They all play a hand.
I’m not saying one is more important than the other, but one cannot replace the other. Pure capitalism is not good. Pure socialism is not good. But a balance inbetween is the way to go.
Where I disagree with the leftist, is that you guys want to tilt that balance all the way to government. I’m just trying to tug a war it back in the middle.
I’m a moderate and middle of the road, but you guys still hate me because I’m not left. That’s ok! I think you guys are great. We must keep on debating ideas, but lets try not to do it by screaming at each other, hating, and calling each other names.
