Hooray for the jury in the David Wittig and Douglas Lake case. First it found the two former Westar Energy executives guilty of looting the company. Then it required them to return millions of dollars in cash and assets, including Wittig’s Landon Mansion in Topeka. The jury could have — and maybe should have — ordered an even larger repayment. Still, justice was served.

But will these same white collar criminals have to serve jail time? A federal pen, with Bubba as roomate, might ease the pain some of those ripped off by these low-lifes.
Say for example, a bank robber is caught with a million dollars in loot from a Wichita bank. (Trying to make this a local example!) Would the judge and jury allow the bank robber to keep 1/2 the loot or 1/2 million dollars for his planning time, liability, payroll and operational efforts?
I wonder how Topeka feels. Those guys were the darlings of that city. Now it is a stain!
We finally got a court decision. I’m pleased that the prosecutors decided to continue after two hung juries. I’m looking forward to seeing these guys be forced to the reality of having to pay for something. They lived off the back of Western Resources way too long.
