Katrina shouldn’t become a porkfest

Louisiana politicians better be careful, or they may trigger a taxpayer backlash against exorbitant rebuilding costs. Take Sens. David Vitter and Mary Landrieu’s request for $40 billion in Army Corps of Engineer projects. Please. That’s 10 times the corps’ annual budget and would fund projects that have nothing to do with flood protection.

    They asked for $250 billion in total. While many people predicted that the total will be around $200 at most, they ask for $250 for themselves. Just the state of Louisiana. This doesn’t include Alabama and Mississippi (which people say was hit worse).

    Yeah! But that is Louisiana. It’s a corrupt state and I wasn’t surprised that they want the bank.

    They should not be allowed to rebuild in a flood plain in the first place. Mother nature will eventually win the battle against any kind of engineering. No bid contracts will be the norm, as the pols only see the disaster as a chance to help out all their cronies.

    I agree Tracy. They need to plow down all the houses in the 9th ward and move the levee system to the edge of where the flooding was. That is the natural edge of the lake. The older section is fine where it is. It was the building done in the early 1920’s after they built the lake levee that was flooded.

    Urban sprawl. Thank your local commissioners staffed by real estate developers. You can’t fix the problem with the same people who caused the problem . . . but that’s what they’ll do.

    BTW, what the hell is your point? People that owned houses will have them bought out by insurance or the gov’t. People who were renting will get new places to rent.
