OK, I take back what I said the other day about Hollywood’s decline and lousy remakes and all. Steven Spielberg’s done it again. His "War of the Worlds" is spectacular summer entertainment, and the scariest alien invasion movie ever. I’m not a big Tom Cruise fan, but he’s excellent and winning as a deadbeat dad who rises to the occasion, and child actor Dakota Fanning is another standout.
The special effects are simply stunning. You will believe.
Spielberg’s craftsmanship is in a league of its own. This is the kind of moviemaking excellence that will keep Hollywood alive.

I’ll check it out. I hope it’s good, because Spielberg’s last few films have been a let down. :)
But this one does look really cool.
I’m going to see Worlds this weekend, but I also just saw White Noise on pay-per-view and was surprised how suspenseful and well done it was. I highly recommend “In My Country” with Samuel Jackson. This is an excellent movie about the South African Truth and Reconciliation hearings, and about the differing perspectives on racism the characters had: Jackson was an U.S. reporter who imported his uniquely American perspective, and Juliet Bino…. played an Afikaaner who was also reporting on this important chapter in the history of her beloved country. Lots of unique imagery and heart-rending accounts of evil during apartheid.
But Randy, which was more unbelievable….space aliens, or Tim Robbins with a (gasp) GUN in his home?
I checked it out this holiday weekend and I was disappointed, yet again, by Spielberg. Yeah! The special effects were cool, but the dialog and characters were really dry and boring. Dakota is really annoying, and Cruise character is inconsistent along with the little details of the film that were out of place.
I put this away with the boring movies like AI and Minority Report that Spielburg got wrong.
I found that Independence Day was done a lot better as a version of War of the Worlds then this one.
Thumbs down, only two stars out of five.
