Margie Phelps: public official and hatemonger

My column last week (read it here) explored what I think many Kansans would agree is a weird situation: Margie Phelps, daughter of Fred and a sometime spokeswoman for her father’s anti-gay hate group, is also a high-ranking official for the Kansas Department of Corrections. She’s been appearing with the “church” as they picket the funerals of soldiers killed in Iraq and Afghanistan and praise the bombs that killed them.
Yes, she has her First Amendment rights, but are her wildly inflammatory and hurtful words appropriate for a public official whose salary is being paid by taxpayers? Just wondering.

Who’s the retard that appointed her in the first place? It no secret that the Phelps family are loons. I wonder if she would have a state job if she was a Nazi or a Klan Member. If I recall correctly the FBI lists the Westboro Bapisit CHurch as a hate group along with the KKK, Aryan Brotherhood ect.

I don’t know how someone with these kinds of beliefs and attitudes could be trusted to make decisions regarding their governmental duties correctly, reliably and rationally. But the time to have rejected her was when she applied for the job. It would be a bad idea if government started firing people because of their political and religious beliefs.

A lot of people see her intolerance as radical and wacky.

Actually, it’s just an extension of the same kind of thinking that bans gay marriage to “protect the family.”

The Bible says that anyone who divorces his first wife and marries another commits adultery. But this verse is universally IGNORED by the fundamentalists while they enshrine the ones condemning homosexuality.

Paul says a homosexuality is an abomination. He also says a slave should obey its master, hmmmm . . .

We can either be a religious country or we can be a JUST one. We can’t be both, for religion is subject to too many interpretations to be consistently just.

Margie Phelps shows what our country would be like if we gave it over to the religious fundamentalists.

    Mister Twister,

Could I have the reference to what scripture you are quoting?

If by religious fundamentalist you mean people like the Phelps then you are only talking about a few people…

785-296-3128 is Margie Phelps work number. I think everyone should give her a call and tell her what a fine job is doing in protesting at dead soldiers funerals.

Firing someone for their political or religious beliefs isn’t what we’re talking about here. You can believe anything you want to but taking inappropriate action is a whole other issue. Being tolerant of hatred and bigotry isn’t on my list of things to be tolerant of, nor should they be on anyone’s list who proclaims to be a Christian. I do have an idea where the Phelps clan “dug up” their “God”. Anybody know how long she’s held this job?

Margie Phelps certainly has the right to her views; the problem is that most of us don’t believe her when she says she keeps them separate from her job. The rampant hatred and paranoia of her family isn’t something that stays compartmentalized for long, and she has a job where she must treat various of her family’s purported enemies fairly. Her appointment to that position has just about as much credibility as appointing a Grand Dragon of the KKK to the EEOC! She needs to resign from either her job or her family to be credible, and at this late date, even that would probably be too little, too late. She really must just leave-hopefully, the state- and find a job where her prejudices don’t matter. Cleaning sewers comes to mind.

Someone need to start a movement to get her out of office. She’s bullied others long enough, let her get some of her own medicine. Surely there is a conflict of interest regarding her work and her outside activities. How do we get started?

    Soldier,

The Army pays for your college too don’t they? How’s that coming along? What other benefits are there? I always am impressed at the level of discipline in the armed forces. I hear they give great benefits, the only drawback of course is you could get killed in your line of work.

The Army will pay for college and there are online systems that we can go to in order to earn college credits. But, we dont always have the time alloted to us to get that education while were in, most of us do it when we get out. As far as benefits, well, you get pretty good training in some highly technical areas if you have the right MOS, and your pretty much taken care of medically, and food, and living arrangements. more or less you never have need of anything, because were given all we need. Theres a few more draw backs then just getting killed. For one, having to sit back and let this woman run her mouth at the funerals of my fallen comrades. Its very disheartening to hear some of what is going on back home. Makes us wonder sometimes.

I think she needs to be kidnapped and dropped off in downtown Baghdad. Then lets see how many U.S troops she runs to screaming, “help me, help me!” How freaking ironic would that be?-Soldier who was there.

People like Fred Phelps disgust me in every way. I’m not religious at all, but I know he’s taking every word that he is going by in the bible out of context, and out of proportion. He seems to only focus on the things people do ‘against’ the bible, and not what people do ‘for’ the bible. He needs to focus on the good, rather than the evil.

Why do Americans have such a problem with Margie and her family? Your Constitution guarantees free speech- which applies to ALL- and yet you whine when a fellow-American exercises that right. I just don’t understand your reasoning.

Would YOU like people to suggest kicking you out of your job because your views were held only by a minority?

Spare a thought for the hundreds of millions who DO NOT HAVE A RIGHT TO FREE SPEECH!!!

So you have the right to freedom of speech… thats fine. My question is, if you had a son or daughter or family member that actually had the balls to stand up and do something in the military instead of cry and complain about it and they died, would you still be standing in that picket line at their funeral? Just wondering… And what a way to positively represent the Baptist church. I’m sure God appreciates that one too.

I don’t think we need to restrain their speech, just increase the Patriot Guard at the funerals.

I’ve posted this at a couple other blogs: when fred phelps dies, I will be posting the location of his grave so that other like minded individuals can piss on it too! Heck, I might even leave a roll of tp. ;-)

Who ever appointed her in the first place should be held accountable. If you have ever read any of Margie Phelps strange writings on the “Church” website she comes off as not only a hatefull person but not very well educated. Her standard reply to e-mails that she disagrees with is for the person to shut up! Her favorite word is “goofy”. This isa graduate of Law school? This makes me question the level of education at Washburn University School of Law and the level of professionaism the Kansas Dept. of Corrections
