Fighting words on replacing O’Connor

When major news breaks in Washington, D.C., The Eagle editorial board always gets faxes and e-mails from all points along the political spectrum. But nothing in recent memory rivaled the communications blitz in the minutes and hours after U.S. Supreme Court Justice Sandra Day O’Connor announced her retirement Friday. Religious leaders, feminists, pro-lifers, abortion-rights groups — they all respectfully summed up O’Connor’s defining tenure, then variously offered prayers and issued warnings. What comes next? A reversal of “32 years of freedom and progress for women” and a “nightmare for reproductive health care and women’s rights”? Or a “watershed moment in American history” that could end “the 33-year war on the unborn”? Fasten your seat belts. This ride could be wild.

It’s not going to happen. Even members that are considered Conservative have even voted on the side of womens reproduction privacy. Even if they replace O’Connor’s seat with a anti-aboritionist, it would be at best still only 4 justices that will vote that way.

It seems everything political centers around abortion which is primarily a Christian/catholic interpretation of the bible (which must be separate from government). I cannot understand why it is such a battle. Are there no Democrat Christians? Or does Liberal imply Atheism? I am confused.

Joe – if you ask the far right (Terry Fox, Joe Wright, Bill O’Rilley, George W. Bush, etc.) you would be told you can’t be a liberal and a christian. I’m so gald they are all knowing. Helps poor peons like me.

It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to see that abortion kills a child. Idiots in black ropes are the only ones who can mrally justify the act by calling it something it isn’t. Here is the truth test. Take any child from any segment of society and ask them what they think about ripping a baby from the mothers womb, or show them one of those disgusting photos of a dead baby, they will instantly tell you it is wrong.

What are all of your opinions on the Plan B (aka the “morning after” pill)?

One thing about the argument against it being that the egg is fertilized, well, not all fertilized eggs make it. So at that point is it still just a potential for a baby? Then based on potential, aren’t all sperm and eggs potential? I think the Catholic doctrine follows those rationales.

So when does life begin? I can remember an old joke along the lines of “we here at Mad Magazine believe that life begins when the man unhooks the woman’s bra”. Had to inject a little levity there, as that old line entered my mind.
