Just when the community was growing accustomed to the transitional name Mid-Western Aircraft Systems, the new company christened itself Spirit Aerosystems Tuesday. The name will take some getting used to in a place with as much history tied up with Boeing, whose selling of its Wichita commercial operation to Onex Corp. created the new company. But Spirit Aerosystems has a nice, fresh sound to it — modern, high tech, flexible, diversified and bigger than Wichita. Here’s hoping the company’s future reflects the optimism of its new name.

I’m glad they adopted a new name. I agree with everything you say. It is refreashing, high-tech, and global. Mid-Western sounds like a rural agri-company or an ethanol plant.
GO Spirit Aerosystems! :)
Of course the previous name was forgiveably mindless, but Spirit Aerosystems? That name might seem “modern, high tech, flexible, diversified and bigger than Wichita” to people who aren’t in the business, but to those of us who are, it connotes “Booz Airstuff” or “Vapor Airstuff.” Perhaps the religious-minded will find it either high-sounding or blasphemous. Who knows?
Unfortunately, a name like Spirit Aerosystems seems more pompous and pretentious than anything else. It denotes nothing but mushy thinking at the top of a company that doesn’t appear to have a concrete notion of what it is. The name hints at feel-good, trend-driven management — not at all a good sign. I hope they don’t have some kind of new age wierdos running the place.
Those of us actually IN Spirit AeroSystems, were aghast at the name change. Very little fanfare, very little hand clapping, very little “spirit”. With the main employees of Spirit, who have taken cuts, loss of benefits or both, the only employees with any Spirit left are those with a prefix of CEO, COO, or VP.
As an employee of Spirit AeroSystems, I was also disappointed with the new name. I am more disappointed that management has remained the same. I was ready for big changes with many improvements. It won’t be long before the people that are new hires will become lax in their work performance as some of the others that were let go in May. Way to go Nigel. Keep up the good work. (yea, right!)
