After all the talk of nominating the U.S. Supreme Court’s first Hispanic and of replacing a woman with a woman (sorry, Laura), President Bush’s choice of federal appeals court judge John G. Let the high court’s first confirmation battle in 11 years begin. Here’s hoping the debate takes the high road.

Just when the community was growing accustomed to the transitional name Mid-Western Aircraft Systems, the new company christened itself Spirit Aerosystems Tuesday. The name will take some getting used to in a place with as much history tied up with Boeing, whose selling of its Wichita commercial operation to Onex Corp. created the new company. But Spirit Aerosystems has a nice, fresh sound to it — modern, high tech, flexible, diversified and bigger than Wichita. Here’s hoping the company’s future reflects the optimism of its new name.

The scenes of Sept. 11 seemed out of place on our television sets, but there they were, being brought into our homes by network anchormen. The familiar news logos in the corners of our screens reminded us that this was, in fact, real.
And now it seems almost as if Sept. 11 should forever remain on television screens. To translate it to a high-dollar film — to make it into the movie that it wasn’t — seems to rob the day of its reality. The story belongs to the people who lived it and those who died. Their names should be attached to it, not Oliver Stone’s.
