The Kansas State Board of Education is making a lot of news these days, though not for what it’s doing to promote student achievement, unfortunately. Particularly disturbing — and revealing — was this comment from Connie Morris, as the board squabbled about her newsletter criticisms of fellow board members: “There were attacks. But that’s part of the game, isn’t it? That’s part of informing people what is going on.”
Hard to see how any of this serves the board’s core mission of “promoting student academic achievement through vision, leadership, opportunity, accountability and advocacy.”

Just my luck. All of all Connie Morris’ nonsense and eagerness to push Kansas back into the 19th century had to go national just when I’m trying to go to school out of state. For a biology degree, even. They’ll take one look at the return address on my application and toss it in the trash without a second glance.
I can imagine your worry. On The Daily Show tonight, Jon Stewart mentioned that the Kansas Bd. of Education was going to start teaching the “Round Earth Theory”. Ugh.
The operating words here seem to be “opportunity” and “advocacy.” She saw an opportunity to advocate her convictions and score some points at the same time, and she went for it. Now let’s see her take on “accountability.”
