A former employee of Boeing who now works for Mid-Western Aircraft Systems had this to say about Friday’s front-page photo in The Eagle:
“Surely The Eagle could have run a more conservative picture of Jeff Turner, the new CEO of Mid-Western Aircraft Systems, than the one we all saw in Friday’s paper. Of course, he doesn’t get to pick the picture that is run, because if he did, I hope he would have been appalled at the choice. The first reaction of many of us still out here at what used to be Boeing was: What the heck is so funny? Because right now, 1,100 people ain’t laughin’. . . .
“The picture of their former boss on the front page of The Eagle laughing his head off on the first official day 1,100 of his former employees are out of work rubbed salt into an already gaping wound.”

You Wichitan’s out to take a little reminder from Cowley County. Years ago we had a very prosperous Meat Packing Plant. It was “sold” and cheaper labor brought it. “Sold” again and even cheaper labor brought in. “Sold” once more and now immigrant labor is doing for minimum wage what used to be $17.00 @ hour for labor which allowed a man to raise, feed, house and clothe his family. Now we have 4-5 families living in one house/apt in Cowley County and sending most of their wages back to Mexico. Allowing immigration is not our problem. It is allowing Corporations to sell their companies and replace workers with lower paying jobs. A GOOD DEMOCRATIC leadership would make that the LAW OF THE LAND ! A GOOD DEMOCRATIC leadership would also require companies that ship their jobs overseas to replace their savings in wages in the social programs of the state they are from – then there wouldn’t be so many jobs going overseas !
What do the 1,100 people that have been laid off want? It’s business, not a socialist jobs program! If the 1,100 want job security, they can work for the government!
Boeing has been treating Wichita like second-class citizens for years and finally dumped us. The military would have sold too if Canadians could get security clearances. I expect the military work to be slithering to other Boeing locations along with less than half of the workers. The late 80s were similar. New military work was sent to Seattle. It was a long dry spell for military. Gotta make that money somewhere!
Did any one notice how many ardent union members were included in the 1100? At least half mentioned in the Eagle were Union Stewards.
I also recall the saga of the meat packing plant. Good Democratic Leadership would have fixed it but Clinton was — busy. Republicans are ignoring it, too.
Boeing’s problems are a failure of workers and management alike to succeed in building a strong company to overcome competition subsidized by European governments and the shamefully low wages in other countries. There is no substitute for productivity, but everyone’s selfishness at Boeing finally killed the cash cow.
Employees who choose to do only the least they have to and always use up all their benefits out of spite have a bad attitude that poisons the workplace for the rest of us. But they are the unions’ delight. Boeing had too many of them.
The liberal mindset in the business world somehow infected Boeing. It shows itself as overpaid consultants touting snake oil cures and endless, mediocre training programs, while unions whip up class envy and victimhood. Good managers and employees know there is no substitute for simple productivity. Boeing didn’t have enough good managers, especially at the top.
MWAS will be a never was company eventually. Management has it’s wish list and their gestapo like tactics will cause it to fall from within. Employees will be afraid at first due to all the recent layoffs but the coporate greedy push from within will only cause a skeleton crew now to turn into angry neurotic low productive vindictive employees. This will bring the end of a rocky foundation to begin with. MWAS has just stepped into deep dodo and it just will not succede. To many key people are gone and the credit takers left are inept to continue with out them.
