Wichita weather: Rain moves out, but wind stays

Showers that lingered overnight should move out of the Wichita area by the start of the work day Thursday, forecasters say.

But the wind that made Wednesday such a blustery day will hang around. Gusts could top 35 miles an hour on a day when the temperature is expected to top 70 under gradually clearing skies. Steady south breezes will be in the 20s before switching to the north-northwest in the afternoon.

Overnight lows are projected to dip into the mid-30s, forecasters say, with the northerly winds easing to the teens. Friday will be cooler, with highs not quite reaching the 60s. There’s a slight chance of showers as well, forecasters say. Winds will be light out of the north, touching double digits on occasion.

The weekend should be sunny and pleasant, forecasters say, with highs in the mid-60s on Saturday and the mid-70s on Sunday.

Wichita weather: A rainy, windy day ahead

March will flex its reputation for wind again today in the Wichita area – so much so that the National Weather Service has issued a wind advisory stretching from 9 a.m. to 11 p.m.

The advisory covers more than 50 counties in the eastern half of Kansas, including the Wichita metropolitan area. Wind gusts could approach 50 miles an hour at times this afternoon and evening, officials say.

Highs should top out in the mid-50s today in Wichita, with a good chance of rain this afternoon and evening. Southerly winds will intensify throughout the day, forecasters say, reaching steady breezes in the 30s by late afternoon.

Chances for rain continue overnight, when lows settle in the mid-40s, and persist into Thursday morning. Highs on Thursday could reach 70, forecasters say, with robust southerly winds switching to the west and northwest by late afternoon. Gusts could approach 35 miles an hour.

Lows Thursday night will be in the upper 30s, forecasters say, with Friday seeing temperatures only in the mid-50s.

It’ll be a breezy Monday in the Wichita area, forecasters say, with highs in the mid-50s and a few clouds dotting the sky.

Winds will be out of the south in the morning, then switch to the north and gust to nearly 30 miles an hour at times. Overnight lows will fall into the mid-20s under mostly clear skies, forecasters say. Winds will be blustery out of the north before easing to the single digits in the early morning hours.

It’ll be a warm day in Wichita Thursday, but it’ll be windy, too.

Highs should top 70 today, forecasters say, with sunny skies and south-southwesterly winds gaining strength as the day stretches out. Winds will be in the teens in the morning and intensify into the 20s by afternoon. Gusts could top 30 miles an hour.

Lows early Friday morning will bottom out in the lower 40s, forecasters say, with winds easing to the low teens. Friday will be a bit cooler, with sunshine and highs in the low 60s. Winds will switch to the north and become blustery again, with gusts nearing 30 miles an hour.

The weekend will be cooler, forecasters say, with partly to mostly cloudy skies and highs around 50.

Lows Thursday night will settle in the 40s, forecasters say, with Friday offering a few clouds and highs in the 60s.

Wichita weather: Dangerously windy

Winds will be so strong Tuesday in the Wichita area that the National Weather Service has issued a Red Flag Warning for the afternoon and evening.

The warning, which runs from 1 p.m. to 7 p.m., covers 16 counties in central and southeastern Kansas – including most of the Wichita metropolitan area. Counties included in the warning are Sedgwick, Harvey, Butler, Marion, Chase, Greenwood, Woodson, Allen, Sumner, Cowley, Elk, Wilson, Neosho, Chautauqua, Montgomery and Labette.

Northwest winds are expected to gust to 45 miles an hour at times, creating an extreme danger for grass fires, according to the weather service. Highs will reach the low 60s under mostly sunny skies in Wichita.

Clouds will move in late Tuesday, with overnight lows sliding to the low 30s. Winds will shift to the north and remain gusty, forecasters say, surging into the mid-30s at times.

Winds should finally ease quite a bit on Wednesday, shifting to the west and falling into single digits. Highs will climb into the low 60s with plenty of sunshine.

Temperatures could top 70 on Thursday, forecasters say.
