So how much did it finally snow Tuesday?

This map produced by the National Weather Service is a preliminary glimpse. Wichita’s official snowfall total, by the way, was 8.7 inches.

StormEventSnowfall020514

That total broke the record for most snow on Feb. 4, which was 5 inches in 1897. As much as a foot of snow fell in Mount Hope in northwest Sedgwick County, as well as a number of other locations around Kansas.

Wichita weather: Dangerously cold, with blowing and drifting snow

It’ll be dangerously cold – particularly in the morning – on Wednesday in the Wichita area, forecasters say, with blowing and drifting snow making it difficult for crews to keep streets and highways plowed.

Wind chills will hover around -15 at daybreak and early in the day, with the temperature only climbing a couple of degrees throughout the mostly cloudy day. The high will only be in the upper single digits, forecasters say, with north winds keeping the wind chill below 0.

East-west streets and highways will be the most vulnerable to blowing and drifting today, said Eric Schminke, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Wichita. Gusts will approach 30 miles an hour at times. But the winds will ease somewhat as the day extends, Schminke said.

Overnight lows will dive a few degrees below 0, with wind chills of -15 or lower. Thursday could see more snow in the Wichita area, with highs again struggling to reach double digits, forecasters say. Wind chills will approach -20 during the day, pushed downward by light north winds.

Lows Thursday night will drop near 0, forecasters say, with winds staying light and shifting from the north to the south. That will help Friday’s high climb to the low 20s
