Wichita finally gets more than a few sprinkles of rain

After getting little more than the dust settled by sprinkles while surrounding areas collected substantial rainfall, Wichita and Sedgwick County finally received a hearty dousing late Thursday afternoon and into the evening.

Officially, Wichita recorded 1.19 inches Thursday. That lifts the precipitation total for the year to 35.75 inches, a whopping 9.64 inches above normal for this time of year.

Out at Jabara Airport on the northeast side of town, .68 of an inch fell.

Research yielding remarkable details about the massive El Reno tornado

More details about the massive and deadly El Reno tornado of May 31 are beginning to emerge as researchers begin publishing papers about the record-setting monster.

The National Weather Service recently downgraded the El Reno tornado from EF5 to an EF3, based on damage estimates, but a research paper presented at a radar conference in Colorado this week suggests the tornado’s actual strength easily meets the EF5 threshold.

Beautiful weather is on tap for the Wichita area this weekend, forecasters say.

As in sunny skies and highs in the 70s. Winds will be gusty today, nearing 25 miles an hour at times. But they’ll ease Saturday and Sunday.

Overnight lows will dip into the mid-50s, forecasters say, reminding us that autumn is knocking on the door.
