September slips away quietly

A tranquil Monday is September’s parting gift to the Wichita area.

Wichita recorded 2.03 inches of rain in September. That’s slightly more than an inch below normal. Thanks to the month of monsoon weather in late July and early August, however, at 36.20 inches Wichita is still more than 9 inches above normal for the year.

Wichita hit 100 twice in the month, taking the total for 2013 to 13. There were 11 other days above 90.

Wichita weather: A pleasant start to the work week

The stretch of delightful weather in the Wichita area will continue for much of the week, forecasters say.

Highs will climb into the low 80s under mostly sunny skies today, with light winds to tease the skin.

More low 80s are expected through Thursday, forecasters say, with sunshine expected Tuesday and Wednesday and a few showers possible on Thursday.

Lows will be in the upper 50s tonight and in the 60s the next two nights.

Wichita weather: Warm and windy, then rain moves in

It’ll be another warm and windy day in the Wichita area today, forecasters say, before showers and thunderstorms move in overnight.

Highs today will be in the upper 80s under mostly sunny skies, with gusty southerly winds topping 30 miles an hour at times. Lows tonight will only slip to the mid-60s as the rain arrives.

Rain is likely through the morning Saturday along with cooler temperatures, forecasters say. Highs will only be in the mid-70s.

Sunday should be sunny and pleasant, with highs in the upper 70s.

Summer makes a cameo appearance today in the Wichita area, with highs touching 90 and southerly winds reaching blow-your-hat-off speeds.

Gusts could approach 30 miles an hour under mostly sunny skies, forecasters say. Steady breezes will be in the teens.

Lows tonight will dip into the mid-60s, with winds losing little of their energy. Gusts will still top 25 miles an hour.

Friday will echo Thursday, forecasters say, with highs in the upper 80s and south winds gusting to more than 30 miles an hour.

Showers and thunderstorms move in early Saturday, bringing cooler temperatures with them.

Sunny skies, light winds and highs in the mid-80s are in the forecast for the Wichita area today.

The past few days have been rather breezy, but forecasters say winds will be in the single digits as they switch directions throughout the day.

Skies will remain clear overnight as temperatures dip into the low 60s. Southerly winds will strengthen slightly into the low teens.

Thursday will be warmer, forecasters say, with highs near 90. It’ll be breezy again, with south winds in the upper teens and gusts nearing 30 miles an hour.

Friday will be another warm one, with highs in the upper 80s, before showers and cooler temperatures arrive for the weekend.

Winds will remain robust today as temperatures once again nudge above 80 degrees in the Wichita area, forecasters say.

Skies will be sunny, forecasters say, with north-northwesterly winds gusting near 30 miles an hour at times and otherwise blowing steadily in the teens. Overnight lows will slip into the mid-50s under mostly clear skies.

Wednesday will pleasant in the metropolitan area, forecasters say, with highs in the low to mid-80s and winds shifting back to the south and easing to the low teens.

More sunshine is expected Thursday before a chance of showers returns Friday.

Wichita weather: A steady diet of sunshine and 80s

Autumn’s opening days offer appealing weather for the next several days in the Wichita area.

Highs today will be in the low 80s under mostly sunny skies, forecasters say. It’ll be breezy, with south winds steady in the teens and gusting at times to more than 30 miles an hour.

Overnight lows will slip into the mid-50s, with winds easing slightly.

Tuesday will see those winds shift to the north-northwest, forecasters say, with highs again crawling above the 80-degree mark. Winds will stay below the teens most of the day.

Sunshine and 80s are expected through the rest of the work week, forecasters say.

Wichita finally gets more than a few sprinkles of rain

After getting little more than the dust settled by sprinkles while surrounding areas collected substantial rainfall, Wichita and Sedgwick County finally received a hearty dousing late Thursday afternoon and into the evening.

Officially, Wichita recorded 1.19 inches Thursday. That lifts the precipitation total for the year to 35.75 inches, a whopping 9.64 inches above normal for this time of year.

Out at Jabara Airport on the northeast side of town, .68 of an inch fell.

Research yielding remarkable details about the massive El Reno tornado

More details about the massive and deadly El Reno tornado of May 31 are beginning to emerge as researchers begin publishing papers about the record-setting monster.

The National Weather Service recently downgraded the El Reno tornado from EF5 to an EF3, based on damage estimates, but a research paper presented at a radar conference in Colorado this week suggests the tornado’s actual strength easily meets the EF5 threshold.

Wichita weather: A pleasant weekend

Beautiful weather is on tap for the Wichita area this weekend, forecasters say.

As in sunny skies and highs in the 70s. Winds will be gusty today, nearing 25 miles an hour at times. But they’ll ease Saturday and Sunday.

Overnight lows will dip into the mid-50s, forecasters say, reminding us that autumn is knocking on the door.
