Wichita as the new San Diego?

During the soggy weeks of late July and early August, local meteorologists often compared Wichita’s weather pattern to Miami due to its tropical nature.

This week, they could compare it to San Diego for its consistency.

The National Weather Service posted a graphic on its website Tuesday saying the weather is going to be essentially unchanged for the next week…which is an oft-heard joke about being a meteorologist in San Diego: you can forecast the same thing for days on end.

Dear Sports Illustrated: it’s “lightning rod”

I’m amazed at how many folks don’t know how to spell the word “lightning.”

I’m talking about the term for the electrical charge generated in thunderstorms. More and more folks, it seems, add an “e” in the middle of the word as if they were describing a color change.

Even major publications are falling victim to the blunder. To wit, Sports Illustrated:

AC Milan and Italy national team star forward Mario Balotelli is a friend of popes, a lover of pigs and a symbol of an increasingly multiracial Europe. But the lightening rod for attention also has the talent that’s every bit as electric as his personality, says senior writer Grant Wahl in this week’s SPORTS ILLUSTRATED.

Wichita weather: Sunny and warmer

Today could offer something rarely seen this August in the Wichita area: temperatures in the 90s.

Highs will climb into the upper 80s or low 90s under sunny skies, forecasters say. Wichita has only recorded 3 highs in the 90s so far this month – and none in nearly two weeks.

South winds will be light, staying primarily in single digits. Overnight lows will settle in the upper 60s under mostly clear skies, forecasters say.

Wednesday and Thursday will offer more sunshine with highs in the low 90s.
