Where’d the heaviest rain fall on Tuesday afternoon and evening?

This rainfall map from the National Weather Service will offer some clues.

Flood-prone streets filled rapidly with water around the city after torrential rains reached the city at about 3 p.m. The same system dropped an inch of rain on Russell in about 20 minutes earlier in the afternoon.

These rainfall totals were as of 7 a.m. Wednesday.

Rainfall map shows heaviest rain early Tuesday stayed north of Wichita

As this National Weather Service map shows, two counties that have been hit hard by the summer rains were once again in the crosshairs early Tuesday. Reno and Harvey counties have had many roads closed by high water at various times, and these rains won’t help recovery efforts.

These rainfall totals were as of 7 a.m. on Tuesday.

Wichita weather: A break from the rain

An oddity for this August is on tap for Wednesday in the Wichita area: no rain.

Sunshine with plenty of clouds is in the forecast, with highs in the low 80s. You could count the number days in August without measurable precipitation in Wichita with one hand – and not even need all your fingers.

Residents of central and southern Kansas will be grateful for any reprieve from rainfall these days, no matter how brief. And forecasters say it won’t be a lengthy one, with chances for showers and thunderstorms returning early Thursday morning and persisting into Friday.

Highs Thursday and Friday will again be in the low 80s, before the weekend brings another break from showers and thunderstorms.
