Wichita dodges Monday’s heaviest rain – so far

This map generated by the National Weather Service shows that the heaviest rain from early Monday fell north of the Wichita metropolitan area.

Wichita recorded just more than a third of an inch before dawn Monday, and had reached .48 as of 4 p.m. Yet more rain is expected early Tuesday morning in the region, forecasters say.

Off and on showers for Wichita area

The latest round of rain is under way in the Wichita area, with multiple episodes likely throughout the day.

Wichita recorded .37 of an inch before dawn, according to the National Weather Service, and hard rain was falling as the morning commute ended. Perhaps another half-inch will fall during the mid-morning shower, weather service meteorologist Scott Smith said, “with some isolated higher amounts.”

There could be another batch of showers for the evening commute, he said, along with more showers late tonight and early Tuesday morning.

Wichita weather: The rain returns

A welcome break from the rain in the Wichita area ends today, with showers and thunderstorms moving into the region early in the morning.

Some of the storms could produce heavy rain, according to the National Weather Service, with accumulation amounts in excess of 2 inches.

Highs today will be in the upper 80s with light winds out of the south, forecasters say.

Chances for showers and thunderstorms – including periods of heavy rain – persist Monday night into Tuesday. Lows in the Wichita area are expected to dip below 70, with highs Tuesday in the low 80s.

Skies will gradually clear overnight Tuesday, forecasters say, with Wednesday offering sunshine and highs touching 80.

A flood watch is in effect until Monday night for 17 counties in southern Kansas, including most of the Wichita metropolitan area. The counties in the watch are Barton, Rice, McPherson, Marion, Chase, Reno, Harvey, Butler, Greenwood, Woodson, Allen, Sedgwick, Elk, Wilson, Neosho, Montgomery and Labette.
