Wichita weather: More heavy rain for a saturated region

Another round of heavy rain is expected in the Wichita metropolitan area later today, with the prospects of flooding already heightened in the region.

Highs today will be in the mid-80s, forecasters say, with east winds gusting to nearly 25 miles an hour. But those aren’t the numbers meteorologists and emergency response authorities will be watching closely. They’ll be eyeing river levels and rain gauges, because once again accumulations could rise rapidly given the soggy conditions.

The rain is mostly likely late this evening in the Wichita area, forecasters say, with some storms producing heavy rainfall. Where the strongest storms develop is largely dependent on how the front that rolled through the area early Wednesday morning shuffles the atmosphere, forecasters say.

Another round of strong thunderstorms is likely Thursday night into Friday, forecasters say, but then the region may get a break from the rain over the coming weekend.
