Wichita weather: Another round of strong storms

Strong thunderstorms are expected in the Wichita metropolitan area for the third time in four days today, forecasters say.

While there’s a slight chance of showers earlier in the day, the strongest storms are anticipated after 8 p.m., according to the National Weather Service. Highs should reach the upper 80s under partly sunny skies. South-southeasterly winds will be in the teens, with gusts climbing above 20 miles an hour.

Storms are expected to develop in late evening and continue into early Friday morning, forecasters say. The strongest storms will deliver heavy rain, large hail and damaging winds.

The National Weather Service has already issued a flash flood watch for six counties in southern Kansas – including Sumner and Cowley in the Wichita area – from Thursday afternoon to Friday afternoon. Heavy rain is anticipated in an area already saturated by previous rains.

Heavy rain is expected throughout the Wichita area early Friday morning, forecasters say. Highs later in the day are expected to climb into the low 80s under mostly cloudy skies.
