Showers overnight brought little to Wichita

Yes, it rained early Wednesday morning in the Wichita metropolitan area. But as this map generated by the National Weather Service shows, it didn’t amount to much in southern Kansas.

Not enough enough to settle the dust. It was just “a dirty rain,” as weather service meteorologist Vanessa Pearce put it. Rain drops collected dust particles from the atmosphere as they fell, splotching cars and homes and outbuildings.

The official rainfall total for Wichita is .02, collected at the weather service office in southwest Wichita.

Wichita weather: Thunderstorm chances linger

Slight chances for thunderstorms will linger in the Wichita area over the next couple of days as temperatures dip below triple digits for the first time this week.

Highs will still climb into the upper 90s, forecasters say, with light and variable winds under mostly sunny skies. Lows tonight will stay in the low 70s under mostly clear skies, and Thursday offers more chances for showers and thunderstorms.

Highs will be in the low 90s, with east-southeast winds gusting to about 20 miles an hour.
