Wichita escapes hard freeze

Gardeners – and wheat farmers – in the Wichita area can breathe a sigh of relief this morning.

The anticipated overnight freeze didn’t occur in south-central Kansas, forecasters say, thanks to stronger-than-expected winds and some convection that brought warmer temperatures aloft down to the ground’s surface.

That combination of factors kept temperatures in the mid- to upper 30s, said Vanessa Pearce, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service.

“It was a narrow band” of convection, Pearce said.

Narrow indeed: Great Bend dropped to 27 and Russell fell below freezing as well.

Lows tonight will stay well above freezing as well, though there’s still a slight chance of a few snow flurries.

Wichita weather: A sunny Friday, but flurries may return overnight

Skies will be mostly sunny in the Wichita area on Friday, forecasters say, with highs climbing into the mid-50s.

Northerly winds will be in the teens, with gusts climbing toward 30 miles an hour. Clouds will move in late, forecasters say, bringing a chance of rain tonight and early on Saturday. Snow could mix in with the rain before dawn, then any precipitation after sunrise should be rain.

Highs on Saturday may not reach 50, forecasters say, but they should begin to recover toward more seasonal readings on Sunday.
