Wichita weather: Wintry mix may make morning commute slippery

A mix of wintry precipitation could make some stretches of the morning commute slippery in the Wichita metropolitan area Tuesday.

Snow, freezing rain and sleet could make elevated roadways slick early in the morning, according to the National Weather Service. But there shouldn’t be any meaningful accumulation from this blast of winter in late April.

Highs should reach the low to mid-40s by afternoon, and roads should be fine for the drive home from work. Winds will be robust out of the north, blowing steadily in the upper teens to mid-20s, with gusts topping 35 miles an hour.

Overnight lows are projected to drop to the upper 20s in Wichita, which would mean a hard freeze for local crops and vegetation. Highs Wednesday under mostly sunny skies are expected to rebound into the upper 50s.

The warmup will continue through the week, reaching the 60s on Thursday and the 70s through the weekend.
