Severe weather threat significant on Wednesday

Folks in the Great Plains – including Kansas – need to be alert on Wednesday, forecasters say.

Severe weather, including tornadoes, is possible. The Storm Prediction Center has already issued a moderate risk for severe weather on Wednesday.

In fact, SPC warning coordination meteorologist Greg Carbin said conditions setting up for Wednesday resemble March 13, 1990.

That’s better known around here as the day of the Hesston tornado.

Wichita weather: Chances for showers

It’ll be a cold, damp day in the Wichita area today, with chances for showers and highs only reaching the mid-40s.

Northerly winds will be in the teens, forecasters say, with gusts touching 20 miles an hour. Temperatures will stay pretty steady overnight in the mid-40s, with winds easing and shifting to the east.

Showers and thunderstorms are likely Wednesday, forecasters say, with severe weather possible east and southeast of Wichita. Highs will be in the low 50s, with light north winds during the day.

More showers and thunderstorms are likely overnight, with lows dropping to the mid-30s. North-northwest winds will gust to more than 25 miles an hour.

Rain mixed with snow is possible on Thursday, forecasters say.
