National Weather Service: Snow storm likely to break into Top 5 in Wichita history

The unfolding winter storm is on course to break into the Top 5 of worst snow storms in Wichita history, according to the National Weather Service.

The current top five:

1. 15 inches, January 17-18, 1962

2. 13.6 on March 15-16, 1970.

3. 12.8 on Feb. 21-22, 1971.

4. 12.8 on Dec. 23-24, 1918

5. 12 on March 9, 1909

The official total for Wichita as of noon Thursday was 11.8 inches, with more accumulation expected before the storm system moves out of the area.
