Massive blizzard poised to strike New England

A snow storm of rare strength is bearing down on New England today, with forecasters expecting Boston to receive 3 feet of snow and New York to receive 10 to 12 inches.

The storm has prompted the cancellation of thousands of flights, so travelers departing Wichita for the northeastern U.S. over the next couple of days should monitor the status of their flights.

In his blog “Meteorological Musings,” AccuWeather Vice President Mike Smith is predicting power outages could last for weeks in some areas of New England.

A map produced by the Burlington, Vermont, branch of the National Weather Service yesterday shows snowfall total predictions for the storm. Some totals could be “historic,” meteorologists there say.

Rainfall totals from Thursday morning

As you can see from this map produced by the Wichita branch of the National Weather Service, the most substantial rain fell north and northwest of the metropolitan area.

Wichita weather: Sunny and mild

Wichita can expect sunny skies and highs in the low 50s on Friday, forecasters say.

Winds will be light and variable, occasionally touching double digits. Overnight lows will be in the mid-30s, with clouds beginning to move in.

Showers and thunderstorms are possible after noon on Saturday, following a high in the low 50s. Some of the storms could be packing hail and winds of more than 50 miles an hour, forecasters say.
