Snow band prompts significant weather advisory for Wichita area

A narrow band of light to moderate snow has prompted the National Weather Service to issue a significant weather advisory for eight counties in and east of the Wichita metropolitan area.

The advisory includes Sedgwick, Butler, Chautauqua, Cowley, Elk, Montgomery, Sumner and Wilson counties.

At 12:40 p.m. Thursday, light to moderate snow extended along a line from Derby to Atlanta to Howard to Sedan, the weather service reported. The band was drifting southeast and may cause limited visibilities at times. Numerous accidents were reported in west Wichita over the noon hour.

The snow isn’t expected to amount to more than a dusting, weather officials said, but that will still be enough to make elevated roadways slick.

Snow flurries in Wichita, but they won’t last long

Snow is making a rare – for this winter, at least – appearance in Wichita today.

But it won’t amount to much, according to the National Weather Service. A snow band about 30 miles wide is moving through the metropolitan area as noon approaches, and it’s expected to provide a dusting or perhaps .10 of an inch before flurries end.

Wichita weather: Still windy, still cold

Another day of gusty north winds and highs clinging to the 30s awaits the Wichita metropolitan area, forecasters say.

Temperatures will top out in the upper 30s, with west winds shifting to the north by afternoon and gusting above 25 miles an hour. Skies will be mostly cloudy early before gradually clearing overnight.

Those clearing skies will allow lows to fall all the way into the mid-teens, forecasters say, before Friday sees temperatures rebound to more seasonal levels in the low 40s. South winds in the teens will help the readings recover under mostly sunny skies, with gusts again topping 25 miles an hour.

Wichita’s weekend will be sunny and warmer, forecasters say, with highs in the 50s.
