Wichita breaks one record, flirts with another

An unusually warm January day toppled one record in Wichita and flirted with another on Monday.

The high of 74 broke the record for January 28 by two degrees. The record wasn’t an old one – it was set just two years ago.

But if the thermometer had climbed just one more degree, it would have tied the record for warmest January day in Wichita history. There have been two 75s in Wichita during January, according to the local National Weather Service office.

One came in 2002 and the other was in 1967.

Wichita weather: Record-setting warmth continues

After tying a record high on Sunday, Wichita is poised to shatter the temperature record for January 28 today.

Sunday’s high was 69, and today’s projected high of 75 would easily surpass the mark of 72 set two years ago. Fog may slow down the morning commute, forecasters say, but southerly winds will pick up by mid-morning and gain strength throughout the day. Gusts could top 30 miles an hour.

Lows will drop into the upper 40s overnight under partly cloudy skies. South winds will remain gusty, topping out at more than 30 miles an hour. Forecasters say temperatures will only warm a few degrees on Tuesday, edging into the low 50s in the Wichita area.

Winds will shift to the north, blowing steadily in the upper teens. Gusts will push near 30 miles an hour again.

Wednesday will be chilly, with highs in the low 40s.
