Wichita weather: A plunge back into the cold

After a balmy – for January – high of 58 on Wednesday, the thermometer is taking a hearty plunge in the Wichita area today.

Readings will top out in the low 30s today, forecasters say. That’s a good 25 degrees colder than Wednesday. Add east-northeast winds gusting to nearly 25 miles an hour, and it’ll be a quintessentially cold, raw winter day.

Not Alaska cold, where they’re dealing with temperatures in the -20s, but duly harsh considering how mild Wednesday was.

Skies will gradually clear during the day in the Wichita area, forecasters say, with overnight lows dropping only a few degrees into the mid-20s. Winds will turn light and variable, with west-southwest winds helping Friday’s readings start a rapid recovery to the upper 40s or low 50s.

The weekend delivers a chance for some badly needed rain in the region.
