Wichita weather: Wind chills below zero on a harsh winter day

One of the coldest days of the fledgling winter is on tap for the Wichita area today, forecasters say.

Highs will reach the mid-30s under sunny skies in Wichita, but north-northwest winds in the teens will push wind chills below zero at times. Winds will switch to the south late in the day.

Clear skies overnight will allow lows to drop to the low 20s, with south winds easing to the single digits. Tuesday should see the start of a warming trend, forecasters say, with highs reaching the upper 40s under sunny skies. Winds will stay in the single digits out of the southwest.

Highs are projected to reach the 50s the rest of the week, forecasters say.
