The Arkansas River is now dry in Wichita

The National Weather Service branch in Wichita has posted photos of the dry Arkansas River bed near I-235 in west Wichita.

The river ran dry there for a few days last year, according to the weather service, but it’s not a common occurrence.

There is still water in the Ark near Maize, but it’s down to a record low level. The most recent USGS measurement taken today placed the flow at 0.45 cfs.

Wichita weather: Sunny, warm and breezy

Sunny skies and highs in the low 90s can be expected in the Wichita area today, forecasters say.

It’ll be windy, too, with south-southwest winds intensifying from single digits to more than 20 miles an hour by mid-afternoon. Gusts could reach 30 miles an hour, forecasters say.

Skies will remain mostly clear overnight, when lows drop only to about 70. Winds will ease somewhat, though gusts will still approach 20 miles an hour.

A slight chance of showers and thunderstorms arrives Thursday, forecasters say. Skies will be mostly cloudy with highs in the low 90s. Winds will again be out of the south, blowing primarily in the teens.

Chances for showers persist overnight Thursday into Friday, forecasters say, with lows again in the low 70s and highs Friday touching 90.
