A light glaze of ice atop an inch or so of snow figures to make the morning commute challenging in the Wichita metropolitan area, forecasters say.
While the ice isn’t likely to be enough to cause power outages, drivers will need to be cautious nonetheless – particularly on elevated and untreated roads.
The National Weather Service in Wichita has issued a winter weather advisory until 6 p.m. tonight for 16 counties in the southeast quarter of Kansas, including the Wichita metropolitan area.
Only an inch or two of snow is expected to fall throughout the area, the advisory states, but “ice accumulations…will likely be enough to create hazardous travel conditions.”
Snow could mix with the periods of freezing drizzle through mid-afternoon, forecasters say. Snow and drizzle could intermingle after 3 p.m. Highs today will be in the mid-30s under cloudy skies. South winds will be steady in the teens, with gusts approaching 30 miles an hour.
Those winds will then shift to the west later in the day. Skies will gradually clear tonight and overnight into Tuesday, forecasters say. Highs on Tuesday should reach the upper 40s under sunny skies.
